Virgina Tech Massacre, April 16, 2007

I painted this surrealistic painting two years ago, but am just now getting it up to share with the ‘community’. It is Acrylic and ink transfer on paper.Original is 30 inches by 43 inches. Headline transfer is from the LA Times dated 17 April 2007.
I have never painted something from the headlines, but this story moved me.
I depicted the shooter with a fishbowl for a head: I was going to show it empty, but then had it with innocent goldfish being chased by an aggressive killer fish. The goldfish bowl may represent the enclosed environment of a college/school campus. The shooter has no genitalia- representing his cowardice. Hands pull him into the earth. I didn’t quite get all 33 shooting victims into the the frame of the artwork. Sometimes we are so blase’ about the number victims in a story in the paper, but try to paint them into a work of art and then see how many they seem to be.
