Artist Statement
I never begin painting with an idea in mind. Instead, I begin with color and movement. Abandoning forethought to clear my mind…to get out of my own way and let the image emerge from between the many layers of color. I step outside of myself and watch how the colors interact along with the build up of texture until I catch a glimpse of the image…
The human figure has been a persistent image in my work. the gesture as a means of expressing emotion…the attachment to self-representation as a means of drawing the viewer in…like a mirror of the soul. My paintings are not necessarily personal commentary but rather a deeper reflection of universal consciousness with multi-colored emotions both trascendent and shaded.
Color carries with it a feeling-tone, visually, and effects the viewers mind in much the same way music does, audibly. As I paint, images shift in and out of the layers…unfolding their own mysteries. The process is for me an ongoing inner journey on canvas. With the expression of raw human emotion, I hope to open a window through which the viewer can visually engage in their own inner journeys
