This male White-winged Crossbill Loxia leucoptera was found in Harrisburg between interstate 81 and Linglestown Rd. during 2009 when there was a fallout for lack of food up north. The crossed bill actually works in reverse prying open the pine cones to dislodge the seeds. You will most likely hear them before seeing them by the sound of them working over pine cones. A rare bird to the area.
