It goes like this:
“I am your constant companion. I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden. I will push you onward or drag you down to failure. I am completely at your command. Half the things you do you might just as well turn over to me and I will be able to do them quickly and correctly. I am easily managed-you must merely be firm with me. Show me exactly how you want something done and after a few lessons I will do it automatically. I am the servant of all great men, and, alas, of all failures as well. Those who are great, I have made great. Those who are failures, I have made failures. I am not a machine, though I work with all the precision of a machine plus the intelligence of a man. You may run me for a profit or run me for ruin-it makes no difference to me. Take me, train me, be firm with me, and I will place the world at your feet. Be easy with me and I will destroy you.
Who am I? I am a habit!”
Favourable habits reap favourable results. It seems that simple habits contribute more to success than luck, happenstance, or even a favouring economy. Further, recent studies on the nature of genius indicate that self-generated habits are mighty muscles indeed. While all of us who wish to master specific skills need to tailor our habits accordingly, here are a few for starters:
Squeeze out paint in the morning before your coffee is cold.
Program creative work balanced with rest, exercise and study.
Train yourself to be regular, punctual and workmanlike.
Shoot down your lazy tendencies before they shoot you.
Do whatever it takes to honour your personal perception of quality. This may mean slowing down, speeding up, multitasking, single-tracking, going back to basics, being risky, being cautious, dreaming, concentrating, winging it or even reading the instructions. Apparently, one of the most common bad habits these days is not reading the instructions. This can apply to artists. We need to regularly refresh the habit of truly looking, truly seeing and truly understanding. No big deal. It’s just a habit.
PS: “Our natures are alike; it is our habits that carry us far apart.” (Confucius) “We are what we repeatedly do.” (Aristotle)
John Di Lemme was a 24-year-old stutterer working in his family art gallery who dreamed of becoming a motivational speaker. Over a seven-year period of hardships, challenges and obstacles, John focused on his dream and ultimately built a marketing team of over 25,000 representatives in 10 countries. His idea was simple: with the right habits one could see progression to a higher state. In the words of the great art mentor and teacher Robert Henri, “If a certain activity, such as painting, becomes the habitual mode of expression, it may follow that taking up the painting materials and beginning work with them will act suggestively and so presently evoke a flight into the higher state.” R.Genn.

The Studio
Here are some of my own personal habits in the studio and with my painting in general
1.I always clean up after I’m finished even if I intend to return to the painting the same day…my brushes are costly so they are rinsed and left to dry..
2.When I have finished a painting, I set up the table for another one in case I get an idea at any time…that way I can start immediately with clean water, etc. and don’t have to rush around getting things ready..
3.I keep note pads everywhere, so I can jot down ideas for paintings any time, anywhere...
4.The studio is generally tidy, but I do have a lot of stuff sitting out in case I may need it in the middle of a painting…e.g. I may be painting a watercolour, but I’ll have pastels and oil sticks on the table in case I suddenly decide to turn it into a mixed media piece…the rest of my supplies are organized in plastic clip cases placed on shelves in storage cupboards…as I have said in earlier posts, I keep a version of an art supply store in my studio space, so I never have to run out to buy something I may suddenly want to use.
5.I keep many visual and written journals, but I almost never have to refer to them when deciding on a new piece..once I’ve put it down in a journal it stays in my head...
6.I have a memo board to note supplies that are getting low, and I grab the sheet when I’m going to the store…needless to say I always come home with more than I planned…an art store, like the hardware store, is a treasure trove to me...
7.The most important habit of all, and that is why my website has the name, is that I PAINT EVERY DAY, every single day, even if it’s for a very short time and even if it’s something really small…in the summer this is curtailed as I have two gardens, but except for those three months, I try to fit some painting in between all my other duties and believe me these are many, onerous, and difficult…when I am not actually painting, I try to read about painters and painting or I visit art galleries…this is not to say that painting takes up all of my time ..it doesn’t…it can’t…but while I am making art, I do it to the hilt…it is the only way to succeed at it...Janis

I totally agree with the word BRILLIANT from Fee. This is wonderful and totally inspiring. I will favorite this because I want to remember where it is, but like you, once I have something and put it some where or write it down, I don’t have to refer to it….but I like knowing where it is. THANKS JANIS!!! FANTASTIC POST!!
Anna D'Accione

Well i guess being colour spills out to every thing else!! I have to admit…......I am the complete opposite of you!!!! If you saw my space i’m sure you would give me a talking to or see it turn around and walk out!! Your article here makes somber & think. I feel like I want to apologize!!!!!!!
Janis Zroback replied
I can’t work or even think with a mess around me, and I am not really convinced that any one can do their best work in the middle of chaos…don’t apologise but get out the bins and start organising it…make a point of getting rid of 50 things….
Susan Kimball
Thank you for your generous sharing, I also bought a book that you had talked about which was interesting (Art of Instinct). I really appreciate this, Thanks!
Janis Zroback replied
You are so welcome Susan…thank you for taking some of my advice to heart and actually purchasing the book…it is very gratifying to see that…I’m so pleased this article resonates with you…thanks again…
Alison Pearce
Great article Janis! You tips on being prepared are very similar to the preparedness plan I have for my writing. Never know when an idea will strike and I want to have pen and paper close to hand before the words trickle away :)
Must admit as well that as I become more confident with my paintings, I am starting to see myself prepare there as well. I’ve even been dreaming about techniques to try. Is that normal!! :)
Janis Zroback replied
I have been known to wake up in the middle of the night and jot ddown and idea on the pad I keep near my bed…ha…the ideas may not come to fruition right away..case in point I had an idea today that I thought was the first time, and when I was looking through some stuff, found that I had noted it ten years ago…I am now going to follow through on it in my next series of paintings…I’m glad you liked the article Alison… :))
Ron Moss
Excellent work Janis and thanks for posting it. We see the results of your dedication and good habits every day when you post your fine work. I hope to change my habits soon so I can create every day. Your a treasure :-))
Janis Zroback replied
I have many complicated duties to family and I have made my home a haven…to live well one has to have a serene home, so it’s even more important it one wants to be creative at the same time…there are artists who create in a mess, but I think their minds can’t feel rested while they work…tormenting thoughts, conflicts, problems arise if your environment is not conducive to peace…
I’m happy you liked the article Ron…thanks for stopping by to read it..

thank you wonderful lady for sharing this with us…..great to see where all your masterpieces are created and how you are so very organised… an inspiration to us all. You can see you take joy in your ‘habit’ which shows through in your work and in every corner of your studio. A favourite for me to refer to so that I can improve and grow in my own world of art! Thanks again Janis.
Janis Zroback replied
I’m glad you like my painting haven Linda…my two guys often join me in the office..they watch T.V. while I’m on RB…they are right behind me now…I am also pleased that the article resonated with you…it’s so important to be organised if we want to create consistent work.. :))

Oh boy! 50 things!! Right now I actually sitting in the middle of books paper discs & who knows what else on the floor/desk/bed. hehe I would take a picture & post but That would be rather embarrassing but…...ok I’ll give it ago!!
Janis Zroback replied
By 50 things I mean 50 different things…a pile of old paper is one thing and so on…three bins…labeled Keep, Throw out, Donate….let me know how you get on…
Linda Callaghan
oh ‘tis lovely to hear they come and share your space….my hubby often sits beside me on the computer while I am at my small desk working on mine…I really must expand….I am very limited at the moment as where I paint is a study, (library) office with the computer and also our movie projector screen room…..mmm…one day!!
Janis Zroback replied
I am very lucky to have the entire floor…three rooms, bathroom, and three storage rooms for myself…I started with one room only and then as I painted more and more decided to make an office, and sitting room and a library next to the studio…I am beginning to need even more space now, as I work on so many projects at the same time…I may have to move… :)))

thanks again janis..you’re an inspiration..and sooooo neat and tidy ..
I’m the complete opposite I’m a very messy messy painter..but it’s not that I really want it that way it’s just the way I am..once I start a painting .. I forget everything else except the paints and the canvas/paper that I’m working on..and everything else just has to work around me!.. also we live in such a tiny house 11 square that it gets hard even to move around in it here with 4 people..so there is no studio for me..maybe If I had the space I might be a lot more organized..who knows ?.. being a virgo I do like some things to be organized and neat I rather envy your space and your ability to keep everything in it’s place and so beautifully ordered and managed..so well done..it’s wonderful!
I can only dream..my studio for 35 years now as you know is
the kitchen here and that’s when I can get it ! ..anyway..enough dreaming for me..thanks for being such a wonderful inspiring person..so well done! ....we love you janis!

Thanks so much for the wonderful compliments Catherine…I really appreciate it..
You have been able to produce some really great work in your small space…I wonder what you would create if you had more room…can you build something outside?

Thank you, Janis! I needed that, but next time could you speak to me in private? : ) How did you know that my habits are one of my main obstacles? I’m going to try and replace the bad ones with new, good ones! I’ll keep you posted! : )
