A Winter Night..Illustrated...

Looking through the window today at the city streets, I thought of all those who don’t have a warm place to be this Christmas…I decided to do a painting to illustrate the softened view of snow drifts, the lights of passing cars, and the flakes on the wet window pane and to post it with a poem by Sara Teasdale…it was written very long ago, but as things change, so they remain the same ..see enlarged view here

My window-pane is starred with frost,
The world is bitter cold to-night,
The moon is cruel, and the wind
Is like a two-edged sword to smite.
God pity all the homeless ones,
The beggars pacing to and fro.
God pity all the poor to-night
Who walk the lamp-lit streets of snow.
My room is like a bit of June,
Warm and close-curtained fold on fold,
But somewhere, like a homeless child,
My heart is crying in the cold
. Sara Teasdale

you have captured this perfectly in this painting Janis…the words, the dark, the feel of snow falling outside and on the pane…I can just imagine being there peeking through the window. Warm inside and cold outside for the poor homeless. Makes one think.

  • Janis Zroback replied

It does…I live in the heart of the city, and I can see the busy streets from my bedroom window…tonight through the wet snow, the lights were blurred and everything seemed to merge…I kept thinking of the phrase “Through a glass darkly”...I looked around and my room was so cosy with pretty things and warm lighting…I ran down and started to paint before the image faded…I felt really inspired and this is the result..wet paper and two colours, and that was it…I’m so pleased you like it..thanks so much…I hope you had a look at the enlarged version…it’s a better view…
