Colour Me Purple...Illustrated...

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people’s gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple....Jenny Joseph
This delightful poem that speaks of growing old in a wonderfully outrageous style was written in 1961 by Jenny Joseph who lives in Minchinhampton, England.
It is cherished by thousands of women throughout the world and practically everyone who enjoys its light humor wants to know more about its meaning and to learn about the author, Jenny Joseph...

A mysterious color, purple is associated with both nobility and spirituality. The opposites of hot red and cool blue combine to create this intriguing color.
Purple has a special, almost sacred place in nature: lavender, orchid, lilac, and violet flowers are often delicate and considered precious. Because purple is derived from the mixing of a strong warm and strong cool color it has both warm and cool properties. A purple room can boost a child’s imagination or an artist’s creativity. Too much purple, like blue, could result in moodiness.
The color of mourning for widows in Thailand, purple was the favorite color of Egypt’s Cleopatra. It has been traditionally associated with royalty in many cultures. Purple robes were worn by royalty and people of authority or high rank. The Purple Heart is a U.S. Military decoration given to soldiers wounded in battle.

Blue/purple fruits and veggies are rich in flavonoids. Flavonoids are the most abundant and powerful of all the phytochemicals contained in the foods we eat. There are many categories of flavonoids. One group of flavonoids helps make our blood vessels healthier. This translates into a healthier cardiovascular system and therefore a lower risk of heart disease.
Flavonoids are also very beneficial in reversing the short-term memory loss associated with aging. In addition, they help improve our motor skills, which we rely on to perform large movements like walking and sitting, as well as more delicate movements using our hands, wrists, fingers, and toes.
Flavonoids may play a big role in cancer prevention and in slowing the first stages of cancer development.

Purple Coloured Vegetables
Sea vegetables are an excellent source of protein, soluble fibre, beta-carotene, folic acid, vitamin B12, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and zinc.

Other purple vegetables include purple asparagus, purple cabbage, purple onions, purple peppers, and purple seaweed.

Purple Coloured Fruit
Purple coloured fruit include blackberries, blackcurrants, figs, prunes, purple plums, raisins.

One fabulous Purple food is Eggplant (Solanum melongena)
Eggplant is rich in the antioxidant monoterpenes that protects tissue from free radical damage. It is a source of vitamin C, iron, and fibre. The potassium in eggplant regulates blood pressure and heartbeat thus protecting the heart and helps reduce plaque build-up in the arteries that can lead to arteriosclerosis and heart disease. When cooking eggplant, various methods are recommended but all methods suggest that salting and draining will ensure that the eggplant uses much less oil for cooking. To salt, simply sprinkle eggplant with salt, place in a colander for 30 minutes, lightly squeeze out the moisture, and pat dry. Adjust the seasonings to compensate for the salt on the eggplant.

Purple Trivia...
Because purple dye was so difficult to obtain and expensive to produce, purple became the royal color in many parts of the world and is traditionally associated with royalty, power, and wealth.
• The name of the ancient city Phoenicia, or Canaan, means “Land of the Purple” and was the hub of the ancient purple dye industry. The Minoans, a recently-discovered ancient civilization on the now Greek island of Crete, are believed to be the first to produce purple dye.
• If you’re born “in the purple” you are born of high or noble birth.
•
• Samuel “Sammie Purple” Cohen formed Detroit’s “Purple Gang,” a local gang of Jewish thugs and bootleggers in the 20’s and 30’s. This may be the only time we ever write the phrase “Jewish thugs” and mean it.

• Hastings Elementary School in Westborough, MA has an annual “Purple Day.” The children ask everyone to wear purple to show that individuals can change behavior as a model for how to make environmental, earth-protecting changes. Wear your purple proudly (check our Purple Day page for the exact date each year, usually around May 17 or 18th) to show the kids at Hastings Elementary School that by acting locally, they can affect a lot more than just Westborough!
• China’s famous “Forbidden City” in modern Beijing is technically called “The Purple Forbidden City,” a reference to a secret purple area in heaven thought to be centered near the north star.
•
A purple pedestrian bridge joining Ohio and Kentucky can be rented out for weddings, parties, and more. Called the “Purple People Bridge,” the former railroad bridge spans 2,670 feet across the Ohio River near Cincinnati.

I love that poem and had to include it…as you get older you realize that you’ve made it and you don’t care any more what people think…wearing purple is just a symbol for”too bad people, I’m going to do what I want to do, and to heck with it”...

I love the color purple! This was so informative and I your work is incredible! I particularly like Purple-Two Turnips and Still Life with Blue Bowl! Love the poem by Jenny Joseph. I may adopt it as my 60+ creed, annoy my childrend and probably thoroughly entertain the grandkids!
Janis Zroback replied
Your first line sounds like the movie…which I never saw….I also love the poem…it has been around since the 60s and it’s a paean to age…I delight in the sentiments expressed in the lines…thank you Joanne…

You truly just amaze me sometimes. Never have I known someone with your level of both a painting and writing talent in such a combination. I’m not just being kind to someone who I do consider a friend, but rather trying to really compliment someone who I consider as having a super talent. I could spend all day viewing your work.
Janis Zroback replied
Wow Jim…this is praise indeed! thank you so much….I really love and appreciate all your wonderful comments on my work, and find them inspiring and encouraging everyday…I’m working on winter paintings now, and it’s difficult as there is no snow outside…but I have to do them early for people who want to get things for Christmas…I’m also doing some canvases based on Leonard Cohen’s music…there isn’t enough time in the day…

I wanted to post the first chapters of my Memoir The River, but I haven’t finished the paintings to go along with it yet..I might just go ahead and post it anyway….
I still have to live life outside of painting and look after my son [all 24hrs of the day], and husband, so it’s hectic to say the least…but I love my life…
Joanne Bradley
The movie is excellent Janis, you will have to rent it sometime! :-)
Janis Zroback replied
I know it is, as I have seen snippets and read reviews, but I can never watch movies with people in distress or persecuted in any way..e.g. I have never seen Roots or any movie about the holocaust…I don’t watch war movies or those with any violence…I can’t bear seeing man’s inhumanity to man…I worry about it all the time.
