These are guaranteed to either bring a smile or a grimace to your face…
Here are ten things you should never say to an artist, whether as a friend, relative or possible buyer of the artist’s work… I have overheard many of these gems at shows and galleries over the years, and I have heard other artists complain about these very situations ….the characters (totally fictional) could be replaced by anyone you know
...

Luckily, the only one that has been said to me personally, is number 4…he has not asked again since...

1.Why don’t you do that area a bit darker…it looks a bit light to me…said by someone who never painted a thing in their life…
2.Why didn’t you do it in blue instead of that sickly green?...well meaning friend…
3.Harry [a painter you despise] got $600.00 for that landscape…you should try painting in his style….your mother..
4.Isn’t snow white?...well meaning husband…
5.Landscapes are not in style these days…aunt…
6.Do you have that in yellow? [possible buyer]...the wife does not like that red..makes her bilious…
7.What is your best price?...customer at an art show, standing under your sign that says “Prices are not negotiable”
8.Are you still into painting? I thought you gave that up and got a real job…uncle who never worked a day in his life…
9.Wow! you have really improved…the last time I saw you, you were into that abstract junk…Oh! is that an abstract? it looks like your mum….old neighbour..
10.Is that hanging the right way up?....anyone
....

Do you have any gems that you have been told over the years?

Digital Art isn’t real art. If I don’t understand how you did it, then it isn’t ‘real’ art…..........a thoughtless critic.

  • Janis Zroback replied

    Well said…

    All of them sound pompous!
    I love your work!

  • Janis Zroback replied

Luckily so far I’ve only had the one sentence [number 4] said to me, which was perfectly harmless and understandable, since the snow in my painting was purple….but I imagine all these things have been said to artists at some time since time began…

  • Neophytos

Janis keep this in mind , it makes life nicer , ” t’s one Dickhead born every minute ” !!!

  • Janis Zroback replied

I will if the occasion ever arises…so far I’ve been lucky in that no one has been critical of my work….at least to my face anyway…

  • filfil

    filfil

Thanks. I’ll keep these in mind when I talk to artists, because I might end up saying something like that! But one of the things I hear the most is “What is this a picture of?” It seems that if you can’t tell, you shouldn’t tell the artist that!

  • Janis Zroback replied

Exactly…the most tactful thing to say if you are not sure of the subject, is to say “this is wonderful…can I have a copy of your artist’s statement?”..that should explain the work to you…..

  • Estelle O'Brien

    Estelle O'Brien

What makes it even worse…is if you are a beginner like me..and someone (who doesn’t paint) says…oh…”That part doesn’t look real, why don’t you just change it ….” and you do…. and ruin it! Maybe it (the “well meaning” criticism) can help me to develop trust in my own instinct?!

  • Janis Zroback replied

Never listen to criticism unless it’s from an expert…there are certain essential qualities that a painting must show to be considered “good”, but “looking real” is not a valid criticism, unless that’s what you were trying to achieve….

I tell people I am painting/drawing what is in my head so they can not argue with the result as they can not see inside my head.
Glad u have kept your sense of humour!

  • Janis Zroback replied

None of these things were actually said to me with the exception of number 4, and since the snow on the picture was purple I immediately forgave the question…but I can imagine that they have been said to other people, and that’s why I wrote the article….it’s all imaginary

  • Holly Werner

    Holly Werner

    Shoot them is RIGHT!

If I ever meet any of them, but since they’re imaginary, it may never happen….even then it will have to be a shootout in the mind only….

  • Faith Puleston

What a fun way to start a day! I think we’ve all heard this kind of remark. e.g. Make your painting match the doormat/curtains/cat ( = adaptable art – and doesn’t this actually apply to many painters who work in series of almost identical works?

One of my personal favourites is from someone I gave a painting to (and immediately regretted doing so). She said: “I’m glad you gave me something I can recognize (flowers, actually). I wouldn’t have hung it up if it had been one of those funny ones (abstract).”

Mmmmmmmm As an opera singer I was also subject to inane remarks. One of the commonest was “What do you do during the day?”

As far as people criticising my work is concerned, no news is not necessarily good news, but I’d rather people kept quiet if they can’t say anything nice. OK Saying: “That’s nice. What is it?” is not so nice, either.

  • Janis Zroback replied

All this is so true, and that’s why I came up with this article even though with the exception of number 4, none of them have happened to me ..as yet…people think they are doing you a favour by criticizing your work, because that is “helping you to get on”, yet they would really resent it if you did the same thing to them or asked them the same inane questions….

  • Matthew Rogers

    Matthew Rogers

I’ve been asked ‘Why don’t you get a proper job, like a painter and decorator?’ before. LOL. It seems that some people just do not understand what art is about, but think they do, so they express their views in a way that is blunt to say the least. By the way Janis, I think your use of colour in your work makes it one of the most inspirational portfolios on RedBubble. Thank you and congratulations :-) Matt.

  • Janis Zroback replied

    Thank you Matt…that’s a lovely compliment…
I wrote this as a fictional article and made up the situations thinking that it might resonate with some people, and at least amuse others, but I see that most people have a similar tale to tell…I see that I’ll have to do a part 2

  • Janis Zroback replied

I loved your story..we just killed ourselves laughing “too much blue” indeed…as if there were some rule as to how much blue an artist should use…I guess she knew, who never painted anything in her life…...thanks for the suggestion about art/war stories….I will do it..

  • Natella2020

Valuable advice, Janis. From this point of view, they sound pretty funny, but it would be real embarrassing to say any of these things.

  • Janis Zroback replied

I think that in general, the people who say these kinds of things, think that they are in the right and have no feeling of embarrassment…as artists, the only way to keep your sanity when you are told this kind of thing, is to laugh it off…

Yes, I can identify with these. I met a woman I knew at a local art show and unbeknownst to her we were standing next to one of my abstract nudes. “There’s a lot of rubbish here this year, isn’t there,” she said. “I mean, just look at that one.” She points at mine. “It looks like she’s looking up her crack.” Nice …

“That’s mine,” I said simply and smiled.
Don’t know if it had any impact.
BTW the painting at the end of this piece is beautiful.

  • Janis Zroback replied

Thank you so much Anne…glad you like my work…RB allows me to really explore my creativity to the fullest…I only wish there were more painters here…
When I started to make up the ideas in this article, I thought it would just get a bit of a laugh and that would be it…how wrong was I?
These experiences turned out to be quite real and many artists have gone through these or similar situations like you did..but most of us know that we do great work and for every silly comment uttered, there is someone out there who is able to recognize quality work when they see it…

  • MARTISTIC

If someone tells you your work doesn’t look real then the correct reply is “Buy a F*ING photo then!”
It’s not just things you should never say to an artist either, it’s whayt you should never do. My wife took it upon herself to scrape an image of a figure off one of my works as the reference was a photo of her and she didn’t like the image! I do admire her skill though as it was an acrylic picture and I only noticed when I looked and saw two disembodied boots walking unaided on the beach scene I had painted! I guess I’ll have to live with it as you aren’t allowed to brutally murder your spouse even in the case of extreme provocation!!!

    I like the frame..

Is that all you have to do to paint clouds..?

    Do you like painting?

    My Mother/Aunt /Daughter/paints..

I must show you …. [insert name of 2 year olds] drawings, after me showing some quick sketches of planned paintings.

It won’t win the Archibald though, will it..[said by person watching me paint a landscape[The Archibald is Australia’s the most prestige’s portrait prize ] [No it won’t…]

Can you do me one just like that ? But with soft green and not the dark green and also a square format and can you frame it with matt exactly to match the curtains, like the ones you did last year?

  • Janis Zroback replied

I think we have enough fodder here for several other articles..incredible what people have no qualms in saying to artists that they would never say to anyone else…thanks so much for adding your experiences to the list…it’s a good thing we could laugh about it…

For a writer the hated one is
“Oh so you’re a writer! have you anything published?” said as if you can only be a writer if you have been published
    second worst
“Would I have read anything of yours?” derrr I dunno have you?
“Would I like what you’ve written so far?” again derr I dunno have you read it yet?
and the old “Is It a …?” (Insert style here – mystery, comedy, romance, historical, crime, sci-fi, action, biographical, etc)
and if you say “yes” then they say “Oh I never read them”
and if you say “no” then they say “Oh I only read them!”

    hopeless!
    Chookas! ♥

  • Angela Legge

    Angela Legge 6 days ago

Yes Janis…here’s a few to add to your list:
    1. Yes, but I need it to match my beige sofa! :0
    2. Can you just copy this and sign like the original artist’s signature?
    3. Seeing you are not doing anything, you could get a job at Bunnings.
    4. If you could just put this over there and remove that, it might not be half bad

  • Janis Zroback replied 6 days ago

Oh yes…I recognize the top one, from when I used to do commissioned work…after seeing proofs and approving colours, I did the work, then was told by the client “my neigbour doesn’t like it, but I’ll still pay you any way”....I have also been asked to paint over parts of a very inexpensive print of a watercolour seaside scene, printed on shiny paper to change the colours to match the furniture…one drop of water on that print and it would have shrivelled….thanks so much for adding your gems to the mix…we are certainly a beleaguered group…

    2. I like your new works, you are getting so much better! (after 10 years of being a full time, selling artist)
    3. Do you really think this work is worth that much?
    4. Where did you go to school? (I didn’t, I am self taught) Ohhh, well I hope you can sell something then, I only buy professional art.
    ARGH!

    May I add one please?
I was working on building a portfolio of work, with a view of doing a BA in Fine Arts… A “friend” and fellow artist on seeing ” Dance Of The Phantoms” said: ” Very good Delphine, wrap it up for Christmas and give it to your Aunt”... Oh well, can’t please all of the people all of the time… So, as far as my art is concerned I must please myself… :-)

“Is it suppose to look like that?” or “Why didn’t you use all the colours?” My Dad’s favorite expression is “Show it to you Mother, You could frame dog s____ and sign it, and she would hang it up somewhere.” Love the comments Janis, and understand completely. LOL

  • Janis Zroback replied 6 days ago

LOL over and over…what do you sy to your father after that kind of remark…I must say I have not had any of these except #4, but as I said in one of the comments, when I did commissioned work, I had one where the client told me her neighbour did not like the work I did (it was a mural), but the client said she would pay me anyway…the mural is still there 20 years later…

Hi Janis, people also say to me too, ‘Gee you must have a good camera’, I say, ‘Did Shakespere have a good pen”? While they are thinking about it, I’m walking away.
