Announced by all the trumpets of the sky,
Arrives the snow, and, driving o’er the fields,
Seems nowhere to alight: the whited air
Hides hills and woods, the river, and the heaven,
And veils the farm-house at the garden’s end.
The sled and traveller stopped, the courier’s feet
Delayed, all friends shut out, the housemates sit
Around the radiant fireplace, enclosed
In a tumultuous privacy of storm
.

Come see the north wind’s masonry.
Out of an unseen quarry evermore
Furnished with tile, the fierce artificer
Curves his white bastions with projected roof
Round every windward stake, or tree, or door.
Speeding, the myriad-handed, his wild work
So fanciful, so savage, nought cares he
For number or proportion.
Mockingly, on coop or kennel he hangs Parian wreaths;
A swan-like form invests the hidden thorn;
Fills up the farmer’s lane from wall to wall,
Maugre the farmer’s sighs; and, at the gate,
A tapering turret overtops the work.
And when his hours are numbered, and the world
Is all his own, retiring, as he were not,
Leaves, when the sun appears, astonished Art
To mimic in slow structures, stone by stone,
Built in an age, the mad wind’s night-work,
The frolic architecture of the snow
…Emerson

It is howling outside…we spent most of the day with no heat, but thankfully just got it back…layers and layers of snow are piling up, defying the snowblowers that have already passed by twice through the drive around the house…well like the poet says, all we can do is to "sit around the radiant fireplace, enclosed in a tumultuous privacy of storm" Toronto, Canada..

Well done Janis; the way you painted the snow storm is just like how it is outside. I was already still seeing snow falling when I went inside, and now that I see a night version I bet I’ll be seeing it in my sleep too!

  • Thanks so much MuiLing…I sit here by open windows all day long and it was unrelentless since yesterday…so much snow fell in 24 hours that we ploughed our drive three times and it’s still deep in snow…

I’ve always admired how you can use what would be considered warm tones and still create such a cold bitter feeling in a winter landscape. Successful work Janis.

  • Thanks so much Jim…it’s a favourite thing of mine to make warm cold and vice versa…glad you like it..

Good for you…ride out this storm creating wonderment……this so another beauty…..
    Krazy weather…it’s on the 70’s F here….blue skies….
    Stay warm and safe whini

  • Thanks so much KJ…we are warm now that the tiny part in the furnace has been replaced…such a little thing but with so much power…still a huge blizzard outside…the snow is silent but now the snowblowers are emerging from different driveways.

I love this Janis, it’s beautiful and the poem is perfect I think :-) I’m very glad to hear you have heat again, it couldn’t have been at all pleasant this morning. We, on the other hand, seem to be experiencing a big thaw here with huge slabs of snow thundering off the roof and frightening my cats witless!

  • I know that sound…you also hear it in Montreal where my parents live…it’s almost never heard in Toronto…funny huh?
Yes we got the heat back..what a relief! I was really getting worried as the thermostat kept going lower and lower and I added another layer of clothing..
I am so glad you like the painting…thanks so much Constance…
