Beautiful landscape! I could look on thee
For hours,…unmindful of the storm and strife,
And mingled murmurs of tumultuous life.
Here, all is still as fair—the stream, the tree,
The wood, the sunshine on the bank: no tear
No thought of time’s swift wing, or closing night
Which comes to steal away the long sweet light,
No sighs of sad humanity are here
.

Here is no tint of mortal change…the day
Beneath whose light the dog and peasant-boy
Gambol with look, and almost bark, of joy…
Still seems, though centuries have passed, to stay.
Then gaze again, that shadowed scenes may teach
Lessons of peace and love, beyond all speech
.

Reading Carl Sandburg inspired this painting…slightly English in feeling, but in actuality north of the City of Toronto, it’s the end of the day…“long sweet light”….Watercolour on Arches Not Paper

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

I love this scene, Janis. It is your golden light which offsets every feature and texture that makes it such a pleasure to view.

  • How to convey it all in one layer of paint is always a challenge, and this was no exception, but I am thrilled with the results…thanks so much Frannie…I am really happy you like it…

Very beautiful Janis; love the way you painted this; and how there is still a hint of colour in the silhouettes. The way the ground shines seem to show the light changing throughout the day.

  • Tricky but successful painting, for the very reasons you mention, showing the changing light and keeping the darks very dark on very wet paper….watercolour is always a fight to the death and sometimes it wins, but happily most of the time I do…thanks so much MuiLing…
