Algoma Autumn... by ©Janis Zroback

“It is only here in large portions of Canada that wonderous second wind,
the Indian summer, attains its amplitude and heavenly perfection, …the
temperatures; the sunny haze; the mellow, rich delicate, almost
flavoured air: Enough to live… enough to merely be
."…Walt Whitman, Diary in Canada

Algoma District is an area in Northeastern Ontario in the province of Ontario. The rugged scenery of this region, has inspired works by Canadian artists, particularly the Group of Seven…
I love the work of the Group of Seven and aspire to paint the same scenes but in my own way..
This is my interpretation of an Algoma Autumn…deep in the park where the pines are sometimes bare to the trunk…. painted negatively in a stylized Turneresque manner in Watercolour on Arches Not Paper

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

when World Expo was on here near us, in Brisbane in 1988 our Capital I spent ages in the Canadian Pavillion. Loved it I think it was the best.. If I remember tand it’s the one I remember …. thought I’d love to go there. They set up a ski run too long queues to get in to see. we are only 70 ks away… about an hours drive.

  • How interesting! I am really happy to read that you enjoyed it so much…one of our most famous songs about Canada has a line which reads “Mon pays ce n’est pas un pays c’est l’hiver” and it is quite true…

It has been a while since I heard about the Group of Seven… and hearing that again from you particularly (as colour is dominant on your work), I remember the assignment I did back in high school where we had to take a Group of Seven paintings and do some variations of them in different colours schemes. Here is one of mine

Come to think of it your paintings are somewhat like the Group of Sevens… Beautiful work as always Janis.

  • That’s really great work….Lawren Harris and Tom Thompson are my faves in the group, but in truth I love them all…I have been painting Northern Ontario for a long time and plan to do a lot more this winter…thanks so much MuiLing…
