And this also,’ said Marlow suddenly, ’has been one of the dark places of the earth.

“I turned to the wilderness really, not to Mr. Kurtz, who, I was ready to admit, was as good as buried. And for a moment it seemed to me as if I also was buried in a vast grave full of unspeakable secrets. I felt an intolerable weight oppressing my breast, the smell of the damp earth, the unseen presence of victorious corruption, the darkness of an impenetrable night"

I tried to break the spell—the heavy, mute spell of the wilderness—that seemed to draw him to its pitiless breast by the awakening of forgotten and brutal instincts, by the memory of gratified and monstrous passions. This alone, I was convinced, had driven him out to the edge of the forest, to the bush, towards the gleam of fires, the throb of drums, the drone of weird incantations; this alone had beguiled his unlawful soul beyond the bounds of permitted aspirations"
Quotes from “Heart of Darkness”, Part 3..Joseph Conrad

  • Conrad’s works always give me a very surreal feeling as I read them and none more so than “Heart of Darkness”…all through it I get the feeling of a world inhabited by strange creatures and other worldly humans…
I wanted to interpret that feeling by painting a land that would evoke that sense of the surreal..I felt that at this point they had penetrated to the darkest depths of the swamp…only lit by “the gleam of fires”, surrounded by unspeakable horrors

Very nice Janis – I feel in your painting you represent the ‘strange creatures’ through the trees, and here we see the trees that stand now, as well the ghost of those that have already died; whether naturally, cut down, dug out etc. And it isn’t only the shadow of darkness that roam this place, but the light of some other forces (or fairies?) – perhaps that which hides in the darkness…

  • According to Marlow, it was a bad place..a place with secrets, that oppressed, that frightened anyone who tried to penetrate it’s wildness…I hope I conveyed a bit of that in this painting…thanks so much MuiLing…

Very dramatic lighting, Janis, almost as if there is a fire creeping toward us.

  • Thanks so much Frannie…there were fires around them so yes that would be the perfectly right…so glad you saw it…

You have indeed captured the essence of what Marlow was saying Janis. Very apocolyptic.

  • Thanks so much Cal…I have avoided seeing any of the movies made about this book so my imagination of the scenes are totally made up…Apocalypse Now was one of them, so your comment is very apropos…
