Vaguely visible,
The portrait fills each feature, making swell
The heart with hope: avoiding face and hair
Start out in living hues; astonished, “There!—
The picture lives!” your soul exults, when, lo!
You hold a blur; an undetermined glow
Discerns a daub.—“Restore?”—Ah, I have tried
Our best restorers, and it has defied

Continuing the theme of dark images, this portrait is meant to intrigue the viewer…who is she?..

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

There is a sense of melancholy…just a hint. Cool and longing

  • Yes I agree….exactly what I wanted to convey…thanks Mark…

The blues say night time to me. She is a person who prefers the night hours as to the daylight. I also agree with Mark, there is a hint of melancholy.

  • You may be right Jim…there is more than a hint here…see my reply to Frannie below…

She is… very young… a bit petulant… can be full of herself… likes people… hurts some… can be hurt, too, but tries not to show it.

A great face to explore, Janis.

  • Yes, yes…all those things, especially youth….I have her story in my head right now…total invention..
I see her walking down a sunny street, not looking anywhere in particular, vague, hands trailing loosely, no purse, nothing but a small bracelet of beads that she rubs between the thumb and forefinger of her left hand, absently as if she did not even know it was there…her clothes are so out of the fashion, they’re in again, but on her they look as if they belonged…she is tall, her dark hair tied back loosely and trailing down her back…surprisingly in contrast to her darkish clothing, she is wearing bright red slippers…I could go on more, but this is already long enough… :))

This is absolutely wonderful Janis! There is so much emotion there – I see a sadness about her and it makes me want to know more about her story. The blue dripping down from that eye to me spells tears and sorrow. She is hauntingly beautiful – Janis is it you?

  • Thank you so much for the wonderful compliment….she is not really me Pauline, although I would love to be called hauntingly beautiful at this stage of my life, but many of the portraits I paint have elements of my face in them, some more some less…all my faces are conjured up from my imagination…they are based on real people I see everyday, but more importantly they are meant to evoke an emotion of some kind…they make you come back to look and to surmise, to try to figure out what they’re all about…I want viewers to think about what they are trying to say…
Maybe I will tell her story as I did with some of my earlier portraits….See Mara as an example…

It is fascination how the colours streak down her face like washed make-up, or her true colours beneath being revealed. But within all that her eyes remain full of life…

  • I always concentrate on eyes as they say so much…the layering of colours add to the whole effect…thanks so much MuiLing…
