Inspired by the works of Charles Dickens, “The City and The River” presents an imagined vision…
In the novels, the river has a very important role..e.g.in the Our Mutual Friend and Old Curiosity Shop it is "characterized as “the stream of life that will not stop…the river offers a dualistic landscape, into which we can sink and rest or with which we can run away and never be still…a current in which we alternatively drown and progress”…the river, the city, the fog, the marsh…all recur again and again until they become part of the characters that drive the narrative in the same way as do Pip, Bella, and Lizzie

I love the books of Charles Dickens, and have read them so often, I know them almost by heart…on one of my visits to England I took walking tours of some of the areas he describes in his stories and that made them even more alive for me…many parts of London are still imbued with the rich atmosphere of the Victorian age and often I thought that I could actually see David and Steerforth, Nell and her grandfather, Tattycoram, and other characters, going about their daily lives…
The river in my painting is a melding of the rivers that are featured in so many of the books, often running alongside the tenements and buildings where the action takes place…a dark mysterious place even by day…by night even more frightening…
I have lightened the mood by showing it infused with the golden hues of sunset

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

Wow Janis, don’t know how I missed these cityscape paintings; never knew you painted these – I guess when it come to scenery I’ve gotten used to seeing your Chines painting style… Although looking at some of them now, they were indicated to be done about 2 years ago… ah, the dreadful 2010 ." Okay that is why I missed them! They are very lovely and I love how you captured different essences by painting different subjects at different times of the day. And I love the way you paint light here; I can even see a glowing aurora in motion within your sunset!

  • Thank you so much MuiLing…yes I have a collection of cityscapes as well…glad you like this one…
