Masquerade... by ©Janis Zroback

Paper faces on parade.
Hide your face, so the world will never find you!
Every face a different shade.
Look around -
there’s another
mask behind you

A translation of Yannik Hay’s The Wise Owl
I really did not intend to do more than one translation, but I have now done three…for a person who does not paint birds, it seems that I have become hooked on them…
I love this owl..owls are so inscrutable…when I started to paint, I thought of the fact that we’ve always been told that owls are wise, but my owl started out looking very sweet and innocent…then when I started to add colour his true nature started to emerge…suddenly I knew what it all meant..the song began to resound in my head…I added the lacy fretwork like a confessional where no one knows who is behind it…suddenly it all made sense…that innocence was a masquerade

See the WIPS for this painting in the workshop HERE

WIP #3…refining the background, which will make sense when you see the final work….

WIP #2…the face is taking shape

WIP #1 of “OWL”…just a working title…the medium for these first washes is watercolour…the paper is sanded paper…no drawing as I don’t like to draw, so just paint

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

Fasincating Janis; I would’ve never thought of associating owls with masquerades; though after reading your description, it is quite evocative. But it would apply to any living thing wouldn’t it.

Seeing this it makes me think more of a strong silent being sitting quietly amongst the chaos; the social hub of people who care little about what is going on, though the city decorated with fancy lights is in fact concealing the homeless on the streets, the corruption, etc.

  • Strong and silent when he says nothing, but maybe if he opened his mouth only nonsense would come out…masquerade…there have been reports that owls are not all that wise, they only look so as they don’t blink often, but who knows?
I’m happy you like it…thanks so much MuiLing…

Beautiful! That’s so interesting that you’re now hooked on birds, LOL! They will do that to you. You do them very well!

  • It looks like I am, since I’ve done three, but it’s more probable that it’s the workshop setting which I find very interesting….thanks so much Cindy…

really a facsinating piece, in imagery, color and texture. what is said and what is unsaid . . so lovely and mysterious. love the hint of pattern here as well. really do like this one Janis. :))

  • I’m really happy you like it Yvonca….tackling birds in this way is not really like painting birds per se. so I enjoyed it a lot…
