After so long an absence
At last we meet again:
Does the meeting give us pleasure,
Or does it give us pain?
We speak of friends and their fortunes,
And of what they did and said,
Till the dead alone seem living,
And the living alone seem dead.
And at last we hardly distinguish
Between the ghosts and the guests;
And a mist and shadow of sadness
Steals over our merriest jests. Longfellow

This work was done for Sojie #15, now completed…see workshop HERE1940625

WIP #1..you can clearly see the amorphous shapes sketched out with a brush loaded with water in the wet paint…

WIP #2….I have added some more defined shapes with a rigger, and the general feeling of a secret meeting is beginning to come through….
Watercolour on Arches Not Paper..Translation of Cold Penguins
by A. Gosling

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

Love it!
Love the bold colors and sense of mystery.
A definite fave for me.
Thank you for sharing your work in progress…it’s fascinating.
Thanks so much Corri….lovely of you to say so…..this is my comment from the forum…".the bird on the left remained on the cutting room floor so to speak, as I wanted the focus to be six only..I prefer odd numbers in my paintings and as I generally paint overlapping triangles, it worked out quite well…the ghostly shapes are very faint, but you can still see them in the “mist and shadow of sadness” that hangs over the meeting at night"..

That should read five instead of six…

What a fascinating watercolor, Janis— so bold and luminous, at once. I love how the Penguins emerge from the dark, and have loved the semblance to the Northern Lights from the beginning. Fantastic translation of AJGosling’s haunting photograph. Congratulations!
Thanks so much for the lovely compliment Frannie…I can’t believe it’s finished as when I started it was just experimenting and I thought I would do a few tryouts and see what I liked best…then I realized it was much more than that.. it just flowed from mind to hand very freely and although it’s the south pole, I too thought of the Northern Lights as I painted…I don’t know if I’ll do another as I don’t usually paint birds but I’m really happy with this one..

Wonderful painting. Do they bask in the glow of the Southern Lights … seeing things we can only dream of… I wonder. ;o) Wonderful imagery.
Thank you so much …they may well be doing that….it’s my imagined idea of a meeting of the wise ones….
