You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.
Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own back yard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise
. Maya Angelou

In light of certain issues in the political arena and recent comments about these issues…issues I thought were long resolved, I was inspired to do this portrait to add to the collection of strong women…Watercolour on Indian Paper

The Golden Girl also illustrates this poemLINK

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

She definitely looks golden..hard and metallic even though pretty to behold. Great color. Love that line, “Does my sassiness upset you?”

  • I was thinking about how women are always treated like second class citizens and the recent diatribe against a young woman who was merely requesting equal treatment by insurance companies…we have had to become hard and hardened to this kind of climate, hence her gold demeanour…of course Maya Angelou always says it best…thanks so much Cindy…

Congrats on your feature, too! Yes, women do have to fight hard for some things, that’s for sure, and health insurance, doctors, employers, banks, are right up there on the list of those who often treat women like they’re lesser citizens. I’ve gone to the Dr. w/my husband when we both had the same bronchitis infection and they treat him but tell me to just ‘get over it.’ We go to the bank and they scrutinize me but not my husband. I’ve worked at jobs for years and find out a less experienced man just hired starts at more than I am making after years there. No one can tell me that there isn’t still a prejudice against females and it’s not always men doing it. Women do it too sometimes. Not sure how many more generations will have to go by before that’s history.

  • And the nasty remarks in the media about this young woman were really out of line…I found them appalling and thought he should have been fired…glad some advertisers pulled out…
