That Winter... by ©Janis Zroback

Uncommon cold,
that winter,
the river’s crystal-brown thread
and weary
in its narrow course,
black-grey bank-stones
near hidden
by blue-green
tree roots,
night-rimed and
beneath an adamantine
necklacing of snow.

One of the terrifying things about winter is it’s treachery…it’s false appearance of innocence…those fluffy white clouds of snow piled around each tree, on the sidewalks and streets, hiding untold sheets of black and white ice lying in wait for unsuspecting passersby..
Near the river where the water has not yet completely frozen over, the colours of green and blue mingle with the cloud white creating indescribable beauty…we can forgive the treachery then

Watercolour on Arches Paper

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

Yes, there can be treacherous ice under there! When we lived in WI and MN I took a few spills on the ice just doing things like getting the mail. It is nice to look at though. Great water and ice effects.

  • Thank you so much Cindy….I have broken my arm slipping on black ice, which has terrified me ever since…

That’s scary about the bone fracture, Janis.I fear getting an injury that’d severely restrict what I can do, especially permanently. There are already enough things that are harder because of past injuries. Ice is one of the reasons my elderly mom won’t move back to her home state of WI even though she’d kind of like to.

  • I have broken an arm, my right ankle, and my left foot in addition to the arm at various times and have fallen innumerable times over the years…once I fell down the stairs holding a large picture and when I finally stopped had shards of glass sticking out of me like a porcupine…fell out of trees, off gates, off ladders ….
