Artist's Description

To Thomas Hardy the city of London was a Wheel and a Beast..

“This hum of the wheel…the roar of London” he comments on the spectacle of the Marble Arch..
Despite it’s deafening noise, he knew it was composed of “hurry, speech laughter, moans, cries of little children…all are caged birds; the only difference lies in the size of the cage…this too is part of the tragedy”
The wheel by day became a beast by night, a monster whose body had four million heads and eight million eyes, whom he also called four million forlorn hopes

My painting represents the idea of the Wheel and the Beast…an imagined city near a river such as London is…I created it in the colours and feeling of an Impressionist work, and I think I was channelling Turner at the same time…a mysterious place…a city of the mind
