Gazing at the Gleam...Hardy Country.... by

Whence comes solace? Not from seeing,

What is doing, suffering, being;
Not from noting Life’s conditions,
Not from heeding Time’s monitions;
But in cleaving to the Dream
And in gazing at the Gleam
..Thomas Hardy

This is the time of waiting…we are poised on the brink of winter…the rustle of autumn is gone and the crunch of snow is not yet…already we long for spring, or mourn the warmth of summer past…cleaving to the dream, gazing at the gleam..Janis Z.

This poem is also a metaphor for life…this was a hard year for me…death intruded into my life and it haunts me yet and will do for some time…Hardy’s words about just being, dreaming and gazing are all about getting on and dealing with it…the little landscape above fits well into the others of my imagined Wessex…I hope you like it as much as you did the others..Janis

  • Wessex farm at the end of the day…in the foreground, you can see the shadows of the farmer, as he stands gazing across the fields…away in the distant sky, birds wheel overhead…Watercolour on Arches Not Paper..

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..
