After the deluge, branches were broken, plants uprooted, and what was worse her beautiful tomatoes lay strewn all over the grass in puddles of water…she could weep…she stood there staring down at them rain still dripping slowly from the brim of her last year’s hat..
How was she going to manage the winters tomato sauce…it was a ready source of income for the family…with Jack still sick, it was the only way she could pay the rent… her tomato sauce was in demand all over the province and here they were, most of the plants completely destroyed..
Sighing, she turned away heading for the house…
As she went up the now muddy path,
Grace came running pellmell down the steps, crashing into her, almost knocking her down…
“What is going on child? she grabbed her arm…”Mama. mama, it’s come"…
“What’s come?
“The piano”
“What? oh god, where, how, what piano?”
“The one Uncle Josh promised he’d send”
Josh…that’s all she needed to hear…Josh with his moneymaking schemes that always failed…didn’t he take the last of her savings for this one…what was it now?…Yes electric iceboxes…he said he’d make her rich…well she’d better go in and see what crazy thing he had thought up now…
As she stepped on to the veranda, she stopped short with a gasp…there was the shiny chest and standing next to it was her brother Josh grinning all over his face..
“Didn’t I tell you, didn’t I?…wait till you see…you’re rich Sis

  • Thank you so much Susan…lovely of you to say so…I prefer to paint them very casual looking instead of delineating every drop…

Lovely colors and effects! Nice story, too…I half expected it would end with her making green tomato relish! (Did that once when our tomatoes froze on the vine in freakish weather.)

  • They were probably too waterlogged for relish.. :))
I wrote the story right here after posting the painting…like almost every time I write anything it came to me in a flash..(I usually have a migraine at the same time and this was no exception, one of the very worse ones)….
I saw the farm, saw her standing there, the whole thing…I did not have to edit anything….I can continue the story as I saw it right to the end…..maybe I will…
Thanks so much Cindy…glad you like it…

I love how the water just envelopes them, coats them. It almost looks like they are in motion. Really different Janis. Beautifully done.

  • I have been told about my paintings that keep moving…I must confess it’s something I do on occasion if it fits the subject this case water running is the perfect occasion…another time it was one of my portraits moving her’s sort of like what RB mentioned in the selective movement videos, except it’s not technology, it’s simply brush strokes….doesn’t really move but it gives you that impression and if you look long and hard enough you might be lucky to see it actually move… :))
Thanks so much Frannie…I always appreciate your lovely comments on my work….

Sorry to hear that such creative thinking is often accompanied by a migraine!

  • Oh yes it one of my daily curses…it continually simmers under the surface and rears it’s head to become full strength every few days…thanks Cindy…

Janis, this is absolutely beautiful and your story is wonderful! I’m so sorry that you had such a terrible migraine after the creative rush though. But you definitely tapped into something special. This is really beautiful.

  • Thank you so much Tibby…I wouldn’t mind so much if it was afterwards, but since it’s more or less a daily affair it’s present all the time….just gets worse at times when I am doing the most creative work…it’s simmered down right now as I slept for two hours…
