On A Winter Afternoon by ©Janis Zroback

On a winter afternoon, the light comes slantwise through the window, trying to get under the bed, showing all, there is nothing to hide..
On a winter afternoon everything looks hopeful for tomorrow….
On a winter afternoon shadows are long and the day lingers on…
On a winter afternoon, squirrels come out of their hiding places, running along the bare branches chirping to each other…
On a winter afternoon lovers stroll, children laugh, old folks stand in doorways, smiling at the sun..
On a winter afternoon I look for you again, knowing that this is the day you’ll come back to me

Watercolour on Arches Not Paper…a partner to A Pale Winter Evening……

Great depth and colours in this Janis. A universe in the shadow of a tree.

  • How lovely of you to express it that way…thank you so much Guntis….

Janis, I do like this companion piece very much but my personal response as a narrative is that it has a haunting quality due to the fast encroaching darkness of very late afternoon.

  • I am thrilled that you got the underlying feeling that it’s not going to happen…again….that he/she will probably search forever….it’s the sun that brings hope, but soon the sun will set and night will fall….what happens then….the shadows return…doors shut, people disappear indoors, hope dies….the eternal round….but there is always tomorrow….
Thanks so much Susan for that very insightful remark….
