Artist's Description

Pleasures lie thickest where no pleasures seem…
There’s not a leaf that falls upon the ground
But holds some joy of silence or of sound,
Some spirits begotten of a summer dream
.”Laman Blanchard

It snowed today…the snow was mixed with rain but all the same it was an ominous foreboding of things to come…everywhere puddles of water ran with leaves as they fell….we did the first raking of leaves and filled seven large leaf bags…we will do that again many times before the season is really over…
Yesterday I pruned the Phantom Hydrangea…always a sad time as it’s gorgeous even when the flowers are dead, but I had already harvested many of the blooms, and dried them while they were at their peak, to fill vases around the house…
The garden looks denuded but the Japanese Maple is still covered with brillant red leaves…it’s always the last to go…always the last hurrah…"spirits begotten of a summer dream

The Journal opened at two of the pages, with the deckle edges of previous paintings showing underneath, on the left

Above are the 12 most recent pages of the Journal

“*Earth Songs” is a brand new series…it is an artist’s journal….each section will be a prayer for the earth, for land, for sea and air, for food…. as the pages turn, the images will reflect the seasons, the thoughts and musings of the diarist and will contain many different images, painted or drawn in a semi abstract way…it will be a celebration of the world that surrounds and sustains us, painted in a stream of consciousness manner in a handmade journal*…

I think it is so important to relate what we do to something outside of us….there is a rhythm that underscores all our lives and as artists we are so lucky in that we are able to embrace that rhythm and reflect it in our work…to understand it and to communicate it as best we can…by doing a sort of stream of consciousness drawing or painting, I hope to be able to do that with this journal…. in a way it’s me, as a book
