Each today, well lived, makes yesterday a dream of happiness, and each tomorrow a vision of hope…
Look therefore to this one day, for it, an it alone, is life
”Sanskrit Poem

This poem was brought home to me today in blazing colour…
I had the day planned…first to vote in our local elections, then errands, then home to paint, to work, to do whatever needed to be done…a serious, dutiful day….the morning flew away and I thought “better just rush out vote and return, and forget the rest”…
But once I was outside the unusual warmth of the day made me pause and slow down..
After voting, (my favourite and the only sane choice did not win…grrr), I went into my neighbouring art supply store, just to see what was new…I found some incredibly lovely paper from India that I had never seen before…
I love Indian paper…it is frustratingly difficult to work with but so beautiful…I sometimes buy it just to look at it …these were to treasure for sure…
I bought some lovely Sennelier inks, browsed the books, and thoroughly enjoyed my stay…
Strolling away I did my errands, then slowly walked home savouring a delicious frozen yogurt, when I met a friend….we stopped and chatted for a while…you must understand that at this time of the year we do nothing slowly outside…it is always too cold, but today we stood and talked as if we had all the time in the world…
Some time later walking up my front path, I stopped in amazement…my Helianthus was blooming again…blazing orange and yellow flowers, some parts gently deteriorating, but others making a brave show at this time of year…they were crying out to be painted, and had to be in the journal….
Later as I painted, I ate my lunch…instead of the usual sandwich or salad, in keeping with this out of the box day, I ate a cupcake…a gooey vanilla cupcake with chocolate icing on top..
If I had not gone out, I would have missed a wonderful opportunity for well lived day

Inks, Gouache, Watercolour, and Pastel on Handmade paper..

The Journal opened at two of the pages, with the deckle edges of previous paintings showing underneath, on the left

“*Earth Songs” is a brand new series…it is an artist’s journal….each section will be a prayer for the earth, for land, for sea and air, for food…. as the pages turn, the images will reflect the seasons, the thoughts and musings of the diarist and will contain many different images, painted or drawn in a semi abstract way…it will be a celebration of the world that surrounds and sustains us, painted in a stream of consciousness manner in a handmade journal*…

I think it is so important to relate what we do to something outside of us….there is a rhythm that underscores all our lives and as artists we are so lucky in that we are able to embrace that rhythm and reflect it in our work…to understand it and to communicate it as best we can…by doing a sort of stream of consciousness drawing or painting, I hope to be able to do that with this journal…. in a way it’s me, as a book

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

I think today is full of hope…so many people are experiencing something that seems to be a new and fresh view on life, the warmth of the sunny yellow, just gives me that feeling…the way the flowers are in flower again, the change in direction just for a day, can profoundly change a view, a shift in time, a moment, or a memory ensues, that wouldn’t have otherwise happened…i completely immerse myself in art stores too…it’s like, better than cake!!! I love this wonderful piece and the inspiring message you bring to share with it :)
i’m glad you have had such a bright and happy day!

  • I did….but it was more the leisureliness of it that was significant, as normally at this time of year we move fast because of the cold, and it was so warm that I strolled and flowers bloomed again….it was a day to savor….thanks so much Karin….glad you like the painting….
