It is only here in large portions of Canada that wonderous second wind, the Indian summer, attains its amplitude and heavenly perfection…
The temperatures; the sunny haze; the mellow, rich delicate, almost flavoured air…
Enough to live — enough to merely be
.”
Walt Whitman, Diary in Canada

The last few days have been too cold to be technically called Indian Summer, but they were certainly sunny enough…that “heavenly perfection” that Whitman describes in his diary just cried out to be painted….the dappled light from the sky gleaming through the half shorn trees, a light that is unique to autumn..
The tree in my front garden here in Toronto, has lost most of it’s leaves, so the warmth of the sun reaches the earth unhindered by the usual summer canopy..
I sit on my front porch, leaves around my feet, too bemused by the sight to do more than sit and gaze……I want to hold on to it forever….
Soon it will be too cold to sit on the porch….but for now, basking in that warm glow, it is "enough to merely be
"…

“*Earth Songs” is a brand new series…it is an artist’s journal….each section will be a prayer for the earth, for land, for sea and air, for food…. as the pages turn, the images will reflect the seasons, the thoughts and musings of the diarist and will contain many different images, painted or drawn in a semi abstract way…it will be a celebration of the world that surrounds and sustains us, painted in a stream of consciousness manner in a handmade journal*…

I think it is so important to relate what we do to something outside of us….there is a rhythm that underscores all our lives and as artists we are so lucky in that we are able to embrace that rhythm and reflect it in our work…to understand it and to communicate it as best we can…by doing a sort of stream of consciousness drawing or painting, I hope to be able to do that with this journal…. in a way it’s me, as a book

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

So lovely Janis! Love the temperature of the Spring and Autumn best…. Beautiful Fall colors and the last of the summer green. This reminds me of a reflection on the water – the shimmer of light appearing as glistening pools in the water. :-)

  • Thank you so much Cathy….in these journal paintings I have veered away from taking a too realistic approach to the subject matter, so here where you would expect the blue of the sky, I have actually used black and green and red together, to give a feeling of the season rather than a picture of it….it is always light that attracts me and I go against the norm, by placing it where I please…since this is indirect painting, it is a little tricky, but much more natural and effective….

Stunning again, the words really bring this image into the mind with crystal clarity. Congratulations Janis

  • And that is all any painter would ask….that the work conveys the feeling they want to express…thank you so much Anna….
