Blessings While Cooking
All that I have comes from my Mother!
I give myself over to this pot.
My thoughts are on the good,
the healing properties of this food.
My hands are balanced, I season well!
I give myself over to this pot,
Life is being given to me.
I commit to sharing, I feed others.
I feed She Who Feeds Me.
I give myself over to this gift.
I adorn this table with food.
I invite lovers and friends to come share.
I thank you for this gift.

Last week was our Thanksgiving here in Canada, and I had a friend and her family join mine for dinner at my home in Toronto…there is no doubt that it is an exhausting time, getting the turkey ready, making the stuffing, side dishes, desserts, appetizers, all the trappings that make this annual celebration so memorable…
I prefer to be alone in the kitchen, and do all the cooking and preparations myself…it is a time for me to remember family celebrations, when my mother would make all our favourite dishes…I still call her up for tips, as it’s her stuffing recipe I use, but now I add my own touches…
As we finished the meal with a platter of fruit and nuts, I gave thanks to my own mother and our mother the earth, for teaching me the gift of providing for friends and family

“*Earth Songs” is a brand new series…it is an artist’s journal….each section will be a prayer for the earth, for land, for sea and air, for food…. as the pages turn, the images will reflect the seasons, the thoughts and musings of the diarist and will contain many different images, painted or drawn in a semi abstract way…it will be a celebration of the world that surrounds and sustains us, painted in a stream of consciousness manner in a handmade journal*…I think it is so important to relate what we do to something outside of us….there is a rhythm that underscores all our lives and as artists we are so lucky in that we are able to embrace that rhythm and reflect it in our work…to understand it and to communicate it as best we can…by doing a sort of stream of consciousness drawing or painting, I hope to be able to do that with this journal…. in a way it’s me, as a book…
