The Poppy Journals...The End of the Story by

The stranger stood in their midst, and addressed Nick who seemed to be the one in charge…he was shabbier than last time, looked ill, but seemed determined to get what he came for…
Can I have the journals first?”
“No…do you think we’re crazy? …the first thing you’d do is take off with them like you did last time”
“It’s a life and death matter…did she tell you about the Poppies?” he asked nodding at Jill, who sat staring at him as if mesmerized..
“Yes” answered Nick “but we can’t believe that a simple flower can bring people back to life…if that was so the human race would stand still”
“But it’s true” he insisted, turning back to the others…“when Ambrose set out to find the flower, the story was known only as a myth…but from his travels, he knew that it was true, so he persuaded the leaders to finance the expedition, intending to keep a record of his findings in case anything happened to him…the actual journals number eight in all”
“What about the paintings…are those his too?
“Yes, but they came much later”
“Later?
“Yes..after he found the Poppy”
“What?…_you mean he found the real Poppy_? screamed Maddy..
“Yes” sighed the stranger….after journeying around the world he found it ….here….in South America…it’s in the last painting…look.. the one with the bright colours"…
Here?..where?”….Jill jumped up looking wildly about as if the poppy could be seen growing up through the floor….
“No not right here, but close I think..
“When he finally got here, after years of searching, Ambrose found the plant but it was guarded by an old shaman, who warned him against taking the seeds as there was a curse on it….but by that time Ambrose didn’t care…he was consumed with the idea of living forever”…
“_But why did he not go back home with them_?
“That was the curse…he could never go home again…anyone who took the seeds became avaricious and evil, and kept the secret to themselves”…
You mean he used them for himself alone?” Martin asked…
“Yes for himself alone….he wandered the earth for three lifetimes….the paintings are the only records of his wanderings…he sat with famous men, artists, musicians, rulers….you can see the signatures…yet no one knew his secret”
The night grew darker and the stranger’s voice grew weaker as he told his tale….he seemed to have shrunk in stature too, but the group, un-noticing, were avid for the rest of the story…food and drink could wait..
What happened next?”
“His supply of seeds began to run out…how to get more became his obsession..he had long forgotten where he found them in the first place…then it came to his knowledge that Jill (Poppy) was going to look for the journals..he thought “this is my chance….if I get back the journals I can find the place again…I can get more seeds”…time was running out…he had to make sure she would follow through, so he sent the two packages of paintings, but there was also the danger that her father would get there first, so he had to stop him"…
Do you know what happened to my father?”.. demanded Jill grabbing his coat….
Feebly he pushed her away..
“He is safe….Ambrose made sure of that”
“But there are no flowers or seeds around here…we found only the journals”…
“If you give them to me, I can find the poppies again”…
Looking desperately around the room, he suddenly he went into a violent seizure and fell to the floor…
The three young men rushed to pick him up and placed him on the sofa in the corner of the room….
“Are you ill? Can we get you something? Water?
But he appeared to be at his last breath…..gasping…
“No….just give me the journals
“But you haven’t told us your part in this…who are you?”…urged Nick…
Fighting for breath, so that they had to lean very close to understand him, he whispered..
I… I am Ambrose”, and he fell back on to the sofa.
Ambrose?” they chorused in crescendo….
Incredulous, the rest of the group ran to his side….but they were to hear no more….he was dead….
Standing around the sofa, dismay on every face, and shocked by the events of the night ending so abruptly in death, they were silent..
Martin was the first to recover…
“Well I guess that’s the end of that” …
“_The end_?….
Moving over to the journals Nick turned to the group still standing near the dead man…
“_This is just the beginning_
"…..

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

Wonderful painting of these 2 colourful beautiesJanis. I have followed the story with all its twists and turns and loved ir all .great ending or maybe a continuation at another time. Well done most entertaining.the paintings are so beautiful each and every one . Sorry its all over I think you have created wonderful art and story with this !!LIZ

  • Yes it’s kind of sad to get to the end, after all the drama…but I literally invented each episode including the last one, each time I finished a painting and it gets quite complicated when you don’t have a prewritten story….it still has to hold together as if you did…also there are four more paintings that were never shown…not sure what I’m going to do with them as yet…
I wanted to make the last painting really eye catching, and in real life it really hits you in the eye as you see all the textures, and the colours are really vivid…
Thank you so much for sticking with me through to the end Liz…I really appreciate it…the next series is going to be totally different and I hope you like it too…

Awesome! Great “ending”!! This last poppy is the high poppies of the poppies- so beautiful! What an enjoyable summer read- thank you Janis!

  • Like I said to Liz above, the last of the images had to be really eye catching, and it is even more so in real life…I am so glad the story hung together even without a prearranged plot, and that you enjoyed it to the end…thank you so much for all your support Leslie…I really appreciate it..
