Cityscape...The Mill on the Floss by

The Mill on the Floss articulates the tension between circumstances and the spiritual energies of individual characters struggling against those circumstances…here is yet another river that determines the course of the lives of the characters in the novel….unlike Dickens. whose characters were often larger than life, Eliot perfected the genre of psychological realism, but like him shows that the river both gives and takes life away..
“On the symbolic level, the river, with its depth and potential to flood, symbolizes the main character’s deeply running and unpredictable emotions. The river’s path, is also used to symbolize the unforseeable path of her destiny

I chose to interpret the title of this amazing novel is a very soft focus impressionistic style…the banks of the river, buildings and the mill itself are merely suggested…industry by wisps of smoke…the river is lit by the setting sun….my favourite time of day to interpret

Hi Janis – again you are able to say so much with so little – just hints. Well done

  • I love not saying too much in a painting…it gives the viewers a chance to add their own take on it…I try to avoid the police report type of painting that say everything and leaves nothing to imagine…thanks so much Holly…so nice of you..
