The Immense and Contemptuous Surges.... by

Who hath desired the Sea? … the immense and contemptuous surges?
The shudder, the stumble, the swerve, as the star-stabbing bow-sprit emerges?
The orderly clouds of the Trades, the ridged, roaring sapphire thereunder …
Unheralded cliff-haunting flaws and the headsail’s low-volleying thunder ….
His Sea in no wonder the same his Sea and the same through each wonder:
His Sea as she rages or stills?
So and no otherwise … and no otherwise..hillmen desire their Hills
…Rudyard Kipling

Part two of “Who Hath Desired The Sea” is the Immense and Contemptuous Surges…difficult to portray in any medium, but in watercolour I found it to be an “immense” challenge…not only because of the medium, but because I find the idea of a huge wave terrifying….I agonized as to whether I made it too sweet…did I get the "shudder, the stumble, the swerve?"….View Large

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

..and I think there’s infinite potential in this wave…the viewer perceives it according to his reality. :-) x

  • That is what art should be about…the viewers should be able to add their own perceptions and not be told the whole story…thanks again Fiona…

This is an amazing painting, almost photographic, but more beautiful than any photo I’ve seen of the ocean.

  • This is immensely encouraging to know…I was so afraid that the impact of it would not come through the computer monitors…thank you so much for your lovely comment…

Hi Janis – you have definitely captured the power of the wave and your use of colour is fantastic as usual.

  • Thank you so much Julie…I have been reciting the poem out loud…it has great rhythm and power, and I hoped I had captured this in the painting…good to know…

wow janis..what a gorgeous painting..this wave is so much power and energy ..great colours well done!

  • Thank you so much Catherine…lovely of you to say so…I have not seen such a wave in real life, so I’m pleased that you find it real, however I have certainly had nightmares about them when I was a child……

  • Thank you so much Leslie…one of these days we’ll chat about some of the commissions I’ve had in the past…once I had to lie on my back on a scaffold for a week…after that anything goes… :))
