Landscape Hardy...Wessex Weather by

“Through intense, vivid descriptions of the fields, the seasons, and the weather, Hardy’s Wessex attains a physical presence in the novels and acts as a mirror of the psychological conditions and the fortunes of the characters”…weather patterns reflect their inner dramas ….weather patterns correspond with their ambiguous motives …the weather itself is often depicted as a character in his stories..
In this painting I combined my impressions of several on his books…“The Return of the Native” coming to mind first of all…this is stormy weather, water lapping the edges of the sand bank, soon to cover it completly when the storm is at full spate…the kind of weather that echoes the storm in Eustacia’s soul

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

The atmospheric drama that appears to be unfolding in front of us is amazing Janis. Excellent work. You know how when you look at a portrait how the eyes want to follow you around, I got the same feeling watching these clouds.

  • That’s good Jim…I’m thrilled that it has that effect…I wanted it to give the impression of something impending…because of the subject matter, I decided to paint this one a little more realistically but still with an impressionistic feel to it….thank you so much..

beautiful and so full of atmosphere Janis…moody and mysterious and can feel the mist on my face from here ….

  • I’m happy you like it Linda..thanks so much…as I said to Jim, I decided that a little more realism was called for in this one, but I still retained the impressionistic feeling of the series…
I want to avoid too much realism, so I don’t use photos, and that really helps…it is the way traditional Chinese brush painting is done…no plein air work, no drawing, and no photo references…instead I prefer to paint how I feel about the setting and I hope that comes through… :))
