Landscape...The Road Less Travelled by

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
two roads diverged in a wood, and I..
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

This poem by Frost (which inspired the painting), "has been and continues to be used as an inspirational poem, one that to the undiscerning eye seems to be encouraging self-reliance, not following where others have led.
But a close reading of the poem proves otherwise. It does not moralize about choice, it simply says that choice is inevitable but you never know what your choice will mean until you have lived it
"..Suite 101

To avoid being literal and overly sentimental, I did not paint a yellow wood, but a yellow field..the road is far in the distance and appears and disappears through the trees…at the top of the hill is another road, darker and more rutted leading in the same direction…simple uncomplicated lines and vibrant colour is the signature of this series

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

    Hi Janis , love this work and the series the colours are so richand vibrant.Afavorite .love this poem always have LIZ

  • Thank you so much Liz…I am becoming steeped in simplicity these days…yet these are more complicated in thought than my other paintings that show more detailed subject matter…they seem simple, but they are not…a lot of planning goes into them before the brush hits the paper….but I am totally satisfied at the end…something to think about…
