Abstract Landscape.....Serendipity by

Serendipity is defined as “An unsought, unintended, or unexpected discovery or occurrence, made by accident and sagacity”…I like the last word as it makes me feel very wise…however it came about, accident or sagacity, this painting is defenitely the result of serendipitous circumstances…this morning I started new painting, a portrait with two faces in acrylic… I put the painting away to be completed later and started to clean up…
I took a sponge roller to the palette paper I use for painting, flattening the blobs of paint before I tore the sheet off to throw it away…as I rolled the blobs merged together, creating new colours…I remember thinking how pretty it looked and went on cleaning up…
I knocked off some paint from a brush on to the paper, then I took the painting knife I had used to put paint on the palette, and started to clean it by running it along the crinkles in the paper….I tore it off the pad, my hand poised above the trash can, when for some reason I stopped and stood there gazing at it…at that moment I realized that I had without being consciously aware of it, created a new abstract landscape….I don’t believe it was an accident…my movements were purposeful though unconscious….I call it "Serendipity
" the portraits are still waiting to be finished..maybe tomorrow

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

This really is very interesting, Janis, as if the untamed face of nature is peering through… sometimes the art is in knowling when to stop the process, eh? Good one.

  • Well it was about to be thrown away as I do with all palette paper, then I realized that I had actually created a painting on it without knowing I had done so…amazing what you unconscious mind can do…thanks so much Nancy…

Beautiful Janis! When you say palette paper, what do you mean? Paper you put underneath whatever painting you are working on?

  • The paper palette for use with oils or acrylics…see picture below…you put your paint out on the top sheet, after painting you then tear it off and throw it away…it comes in a pad…I sometimes use it instead of a regular palette…thanks so much Lynn..
