Delicious....Lucious Layer Cake with Berries and Whipped Cream by

Luscious Layer cake with Berries and Whipped Cream" is the newest addition to the “Delicious” collection… as I finished the painting, with all the delectable juices of the berries dripping down the sides of the slice of the cake, the song MacArthur Park, was running through my head… those of my generation will remember it… you know… the song that nobody understood, and that nobody could figure out why Richard Harris decided to sing it… be that as it may, this cake has nothing in common with that song… this cake is a celebration, not a reason to mourn

Watercolour on Arches Paper…9798 Views..

Winner of the Floral watercolour and pastel challenge, and featured many times

I have been quoting Kenneth Bendiner’s “Food in Painting” off and on throughout the posting of this collection.. his book is a " sumptuous exploration of food images in European and American painting since the early Renaissance… he sees food painting as a separate classification of art with its own history.
He looks at famous works by the likes of Brueghel, Rembrandt, Chardin, Manet, Warhol and many others, as well as some very intriguing paintings by a variety of less well-known artists.
He examines everything, from Still Life, to hunting pictures, bottled water, market stalls, menus, dining rooms, diners, and much much more.
He explains how images of food can be purely symbolic (which I consider my images to be)… he talks about the sexual reference is of surrealistic food arts, food as a marginal element in allegories, the optimistic human centered Renaissance spirit of food painting, and the way abundance, success and fulfillment pervade this art… he considers it to be a very undervalued area of art history

    this ones so tummy
Do you ‘eat’ the references after you paint them Janis?
    Just wondering:)
It looks like so far everything of yours has appeared in my monitor
I think I’ve left comments on most? But there are still repeats and
Stuff going on in the monitors, altho it seemed to have improved a lot
    From last week

I have not been as active tho as I’ve no new work to upload at the moment
So I’m a bit slower responding to new works by others :)

  • Most of them contain fruit which I can’t eat…my family and friends help out.. :)) I’m glad you have seen my work appearing on your page…I was beginning to wonder if the same thing was happening to everyone… I missed out on a lot last week but yes it has improved…thank you so much Karin…

This work is amazing. I know I’m starting to sound like a broken record, but I just love this whole series. This really is some of your overall best work. Certainly the best series of works.

  • You cannot believe how thrilled I am to read your comment…this series is my baby and I was so hoping it would find an audience here…as K. Bendiner says “food painting is a very undervalued part of art history”, and I am trying to add my own little bit to that history…
I don’t consider these paintings to be merely illustrations, but I feel they symbolize what we love best, in the same way the Dutch masters painted tables laden with sumptuous we live in a much less extravagant way and these small indulgences are the closest many of us will come to a living rich life…
I know that many more people love my landscape and abstracts, and this has a much smaller following, but I have to follow my heart and it is with painting food that my heart lies…
I will continue to paint other subject matter, as it has always been my mandate to work in series so that there would be something for everyone, but food will always be my particular thing..
Please continue to let me know your impressions…I will never tire of it or think you sound like “a broken record”…
This is my best work because it is the work I love best…thank you so much Jim…
