It Was Evening All Afternoon... by

Among twenty snowy mountains,
The only moving thing
Was the eye of the blackbird

Icicles filled the long window
With barbaric glass.
The shadow of the blackbird
Crossed it, to and fro.
The mood
Traced in the shadow
An indecipherable cause
.

It was evening all afternoon.
It was snowing
And it was going to snow.
The blackbird sat
In the cedar-limbs
…Excerpt …Wallace Stevens
A few weeks ago I read Wallace Stevens “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird” and I was totally intrigued by it….not only is it reminiscent of Chinese poetry, (they often wrote about solitary birds), the entire poem mystified me…
I am not in favour of too much dissection, especially of poetry, so I decided to let the words flow over me and simply inspire any thoughts that might come up…well from then on all I could think of was Blackbird Singing in the Dead of Night, and gave it up as a bad job…
Lo and behold on a slightly warmer day recently, a Blackbird appeared in my garden, lighting for a brief moment, not on a cedar, but on a shrub with a few remaining berries…that was it…
Like the poem says, “it was evening all afternoon”, (Stevens knew all about Canadian winters) but there was enough light for me to see him and for him to snatch a few berries and move on

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

Beautiful drama. Read Frost’s poem. I have loved this one for years.

    Dust of Snow
    By Robert Frost
    The way a crow
    Shook down on me
    The dust of snow
    From a hemlock tree

    Has given my heart
    A change of mood
    And saved some part
Of a day I had rued.

  • Thanks so much Marriet….I love Frost and his works have inspired several of my paintings, and I actually have one titled “Dust of Snow”…it was painted four years ago…Click Here
