From a thousand hills, bird flights have vanished;
on ten thousand paths, human traces wiped out:
Lone boat, an old man in straw cape and hat,
fishing alone in the cold river snow
…Liu Tsung-Yuan 773-819

When I read this poem I knew I had to paint it…cryptic in every sense of the word, there is no mention of silence, yet we feel the incredible quiet that surrounds the fisherman in his aloneness…
I am really pleased with the way the painting turned out…as with all Chinese Brush paintings, it was done alla prima, wet on wet, painted in a loose but controlled way, with a simple mix of two colours..
It was touch and go as to whether I could convey, “ten thousand hills, with no human traces”, but it was more about what I left out than what I could have included, that conveys the vast emptiness of the landscape..
I think I succeeded, or at least I hope so…

    I so love this icy, misty river scene with the fisherman out in his boat. He looks so delicate in nature’s awesome magnificence. I can imagine only the sound of soft snow and rippling water as it fights freezing. It must be a Chinese Brush Painting, as he conveys that same understated line as your others…. okay, just read your description, and it is! Beautiful work, Janis.

  • Thank you so much Frannie…I’m thrilled that you like it…
    In traditional Chinese painting, man is considered to be subservient to nature, so he is always portrayed as small by comparison to the landscape around him…that being said I wanted to also convey a sense of the vastness of the scene, the incredible silence, the insignificance of man against the power of nature, and the feeling of a huge unseen land behind the billowing clouds and snow…a tall order but I hope I got it right…
    I plan on adding to that collection this winter, I have neglected it too long..

  • I should also add that I felt mists and vapours appropriate to the scene as well and that’s why they were included…
