Thunder blossoms gorgeously above our heads,
Great, hollow, bell-like flowers,
Rumbling in the wind,
Stretching clappers to strike our ears . . .
Full-lipped flowers
Bitten by the sun
Bleeding rain
Dripping rain like golden honey—
And the sweet earth flying from the thunder
…J.Toomer 1922

The thunder blossoms here are the umbrellas that were actually no match for the onslaught this week when it was at it’s worst, but at the end they flowered in their glory as their owners fled, lighting up the dense greyness of the city, which steamed in the summer heat

Abstract Impressionist work in Gouache on Handmade Paper…

I paint in many different styles and feature a myriad of subject matter, which I show as individual collections….
I am inspired by the world interpreting it in brilliant colours, often influenced by the writings of famous authors and poets..

Ohhhhh, I love this, Janis. That blue shown by a bit of light in the rain adds so much to this. This is a beauty!

  • I am very happy with it Frannie, and plan to do a couple more inspired by the stormy weather we had this week..Iam so glad you like it…thanks so much..

Painted from life, no doubt… finally got word from family between Toronto & Mississauga that all was well, though one daughter got stuck in the subway for over three hours, & they were without power for a while. Hope you fared well. This is a beauty, Janis!

  • We were very lucky…we live on higher ground, no where near a river or lake although my driveway quickly turned into one in the space of a minute…still that was minor compared to some people whose basements were flooded or who lost power…they were mostly downtown though…glad you like the painting…thanks so much…

dramatic painting Janis…people hurrying to get out of the rain…wonderful contrasts..

  • Thanks so much Linda…I am painting a few more stormy ones inspired by the bad weather we had this week, all abstract like this and the one before…no different from most of my work since they are primarily abstract any way…I’m glad you like it..

Beautiful, great dramatic effects. Unbelievable amount of rain you got there.

  • Thank you so much Cindy…I have a couple more coming as we are still feeling the effects…

Beautiful work Janis – I love the colours in the umbrellas & the dark, rain behind tthem

  • Thanks so much Terri..I felt that not painting the figures was more effective than painting them and I think it worked…

I like the semi-abstract Janis, very smartly done.

  • Thanks so much Jim..I really appreciate it…

Oh – I love this Janis. Living in a country where it rains a lot I have a thing for rainy day pictures
.. and then you have added some mystery to it. Beautiful colors.

  • The storm was really bad and the sky was as black at night, just like the painting shows…I decided that the figures should be silhouetted in the light and the rain to give just the right impression…thanks so much Kira…glad you like it…
