Others taunt me with having knelt at well-curbs
Always wrong to the light, so never seeing
Deeper down in the well than where the water
Gives me back in a shining surface picture
Me myself in the summer heaven godlike
Looking out of a wreath of fern and cloud puffs.
Once, when trying with chin against a well-curb,
I discerned, as I thought, beyond the picture,
Through the picture, a something white, uncertain,
Something more of the depths — and then I lost it.
Water came to rebuke the too clear water.
One drop fell from a fern, and lo, a ripple
Shook whatever it was lay there at bottom,
Blurred it, blotted it out. What was that whiteness?
Truth? A pebble of quartz? For once, then, something
….Robert Frost

In the poem above Frost is looking away from the moon and stars to look beneath the ground..we should too…so many times we dismiss what is at our feet as not worthy of our notice…the tangled new growth of spring, a simple thing enough, is definitely worth a second look

Great mood, I’m picking up on a transition between winter and spring, maybe all in my mind since I know you are anticipating spring, or maybe not!

  • Yes it’s the garden at this time of year…I just posted it after finishing the painting this afternoon..thanks so much Cindy..

Very beautiful work; again I love the translucency of the subject. Meanwhile I love the golden white glow and hints of shadows – certainly lots of play with lighting happening in this painting as the grass appears to sway with the wind. We’re not just seeing grass; we’re seeing life and the forces of nature. True enough we often dismiss what is at our feet; so much overshadows it. What is not looked at is not so different as being literally invisible.

  • What a wonderful comment!……thanks so much for all your insights MuiLing…
