Remember for me the river,
Flowing wide and cold, from beyond Sugar Island,
Still and smooth, breathing sweetness
Into still air, moving under its surface
With all the power of creation
.

Remember for me the scent of sweet-grass
In Ojibway baskets,
Of meadow turf, alive with insects
.

Remember for me
Who will not be able to remember.
Remember the river
.J.Lewis

Spring floods have started and children are being warned not to go near rivers and streams…they are an enticing prospect though…the sun shining through the trees whose reflections in the sky, create a whole new landscape, delightfully upside down…
The river the poet talks about is the one between Canada and the U.S., painted many times by the Group of Seven…
Mine of course is any body of water in spring, but it’s also about remembering the important things in life

To emphasize the texture of spring waters, I used sedimentary Watercolour on Arches Not Paper…

The textures in this are very interesting, Janis. I like the contrasts in clarity vs. obscured, also.

  • Interesting that you should mention those elements as I never thing of things like that when I’m painting…I just let it all flow from my subconscious…it’s only when someone mentions it that I go looking for them…e.g.light v.s dark, sharp v.s. dull, shapes and edges, golden mean etc…of course they all add up to good painting and should all be there in a successful one, but I never plan work around them…I never plan too much anyway..
Glad you like it Frannie…thanks so much…

The blues feel like an invisible force flowing through the forest – moving among the still trees. Fascinating work Janis! Love the contrasts in colour along with the stillness vs. suggestive movement!

  • Glad you see that as it means the river is moving right before your eyes…doing a painting of an upside down landscape of reflective trees is the kind of challenge I like…thanks so much MuiLing..
