“Harshness vanished. A sudden softness
has replaced the meadows’ wintry grey.
Little rivulets of water changed
their singing accents.
Tendernesses, hesitantly, reach toward the earth
from space, and country lanes are showing
these unexpected subtle risings
that find expression in the empty trees
."
Rainer Marie Rilke, Early Spring

Don’t get me wrong…it’s still winter and this is essentially a painting of winter, but there is a hint of a thaw, so in this painting, I am anticipating spring…here is winter, and there is the mist rising over rivulets of melting snow revealing what has been hidden for months.."unexpected subtle risings"…enlarge for a more detailed view..

Love how most of this painting is a blur of colours to bring more attention to those first signs of spring – and those colours feel like the aura of spring beneath the snow ready to surface.

  • Exactly so..you really have a knack of getting to the heart of my painting..thank you so much MuiLing…

No explanation really needed, I know I’ve painted some of my best summer paintings during the apex of winter Janis. Maybe because I was missing the warm weather and the canvas or paper could bring the sensation back even if just for a moment.

  • Thanks so much Jim…this is still a painting of winter despite the warm colours, but I wanted to convey the sensation of the warmth that is underneath the snow..
