Portrait..Lilah
This new series is about beauty… about women and what their beauty says about them…their stories….more than anything else hair is a woman’s crowning glory and says a lot about her…we women many times hide behind our hair…it is an emblem of our strength….we spend eons of time and money on our hair, we mourn it’s loss when we are ill, and rejoice on our good hair days ...
I painted a bit of myself in “Lilah”....she is the closest I have come to a self portrait…her mouth is like mine when I’m not smiling, but my eyes are less slanted…I used to have my hair like that…in fact it’s like that in my avatar, but now it’s really short…masses of hair was just too much work…
Lilah is a dancer that has just been promoted to principal dancer from the corps de ballet..she lives with two other dancers near the studio, and plans to get her own place as soon as she can…next year the company will be touring Europe and Lilah has been given several important roles…it’s a liitle scary, but she can handle it...

Wow, determined look. A lady who knows what she want and will get it. Awesome
Janis Zroback replied
Thanks so much Ann…she will be successful…
izzybeth
your portraits are beautiful. the little upturn on each corner of her mouth…is you!!!
Janis Zroback replied
Yes it’s definitely my mouth that I gave her, and my face is also oval, though not as thin…she is half me…the rest is her alone…I’m so glad you like the portraits Izzybeth…in real life the women float in the middle of the large sheet of paper, but it’s too distant for cards etc. so I photograph them close up…thanks you so much…
John Fish
beautifully painted portrait. I was glad for the story profile of here. I can really picture her as a dancer with that hair whipping around.
Janis Zroback replied
I like making up these little vignettes about the portraits, and I don’t want to make them too long so as to leave something to the viewer…yet I am always tempted to continue the story as I see it so clearly…thank you so much John…I really appreciate your comments…
Mui-Ling Teh
Lovely portrait. I myself have large masses of hair. There has been a time I cut it short b/c I thought it’d be easier to manage; but I was wrong. It was hard to fix in the morning, and I couldn’t tie it back.
Janis Zroback replied
That’s why I have an almost boy cut now…just the front is longer…what with the shampooing and drying etc. my hair was taking too much time…also I am older now and short hair looks better on an older woman…thanks so much Mui-Ling..
Hidemi Tada
wonderful work janis. i always recall painter’s face when i saw your portraiture. lol.
Janis Zroback replied
Thanks so much Hidemi..this time it is a bit like me…
Jim Phillips
Looking at this one and the others in this series makes me think that there’s a little bit of you in each of these. I enjoying this series alot, Janis.
Janis Zroback replied
I don’t see it in the others, but I know for sure that Lilah is closest to me as it was deliberate this time…thanks so much Jim…I am meeting some very influential people in the art world this weekend…we’ll see what they have to say about the collection… :))

Lilah is a beauty Janis..I can imagine her dancing with her hair twirling around her pretty face…I am sure Lilah will go far….
Janis Zroback replied
I looked at the paintings this morning and realized that the photos really don’t do them justice…they look much better in the original work…for one thing, they sit in the middle of the large sheet of heavy paper, floating out of it, and the colours are so much stronger…unless I find a better way to do the photographs, I won’t post them…it isn’t worth it…
Thanks so much Linda…
Alison Pearce
Beautiful!!!
Janis Zroback replied
Thank you so much Alison…
Linda Callaghan
what if you take the photos outside in bright daylight or even indoors under a bright light…or change settings on camera (try them all) but I assume you have tried all of this already?.....
Janis Zroback replied
Yes I have tried it all…I have daylight bulbs all over the studio already…
Carol Berliner
Soooooo beeeeautiful! I loooooove it!
Janis Zroback replied

Janis Zroback replied
Lilah is partly me, mostly the lower half of her face, the rest is my imagination…she is part of the group I call “The Women”...I’m so glad you like her…thank you so much…

Karin Taylor
beautiful beautiful work :)
Janis Zroback replied
I painted part of me into her, so that’s a great compliment Karin…thank you so much…

Lilah…...is a stunner….... I can imagine her twirling and singing as she floats across the floor….....
and a bit you you in her is icing on the cake…...........
Janis Zroback replied
She looks like me and yet doesn’t…its a real mix this time…I just showed her and some other portraits to a buyer, who said the photos don’t do them justice at all…they look way better in real life as they are so large and float in the middle of the paper…but they do look quite lovely close up too…I was really pleased to hear that…thanks so much KJ…
