Portrait..The Beauty

“Beauty is not a need but an ecstasy.
It is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty hand stretched forth,
But rather a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted.
It is not the image you would see nor the song you would hear,
But rather an image you see though you close your eyes and a song you hear though you shut your ears.
It is not the sap within the furrowed bark, nor a wing attached to a claw,
But rather a garden forever in bloom and a flock of angels for ever in flight.
Beauty is life when life unveils her holy face.
But you are life and you are the veil.
Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.
But you are eternity and you are the mirror”. Kahlil Gibran..”The Prophet…

kjgordon
ooooooo those eyes…...what a stare….........
perhaps gazing in the mirror….....or the mirror image of the stare….......
excellent work…..........
Janis Zroback replied
Her eyes and her lips are classical beauty…that is true….but what is she thinking with her intense look and lack of hair?...what is she experiencing?..
My paintings always tell a very long and complicated story…longer than what is apparent…think again…
coppertrees
Wonderful expressions
Janis Zroback replied
Thank you so much Vickie…I’m happy you like it…

Woooaah. The “fierce” Beauty!! This is great!! Might be my fav but now they are competing with each other! Course I have green eyes and blonde hair – I might be biased here ;-)lol
Janis Zroback replied
Fierce indeed…her expression tells her story…she is a fighter…she is also my favourite…so far anyway…who knows what tomorrow may bring? I decided today that I like using the gouache, so will continue that way for now.. :)))
Thank you so much Leslie…
Els Steutel
She has the looks of Grace Jones…
again a great one:o)
Janis Zroback replied
Clever Els…I was thinking of Grace a few days ago…maybe I was channelling her…have not seen her for a while…but this beauty is saying more…witness her lack of hair…
I’m really pleased you like her…thanks so much…

I have never worked with gouache – not even sure what it is, a kind of watercolor? What are the advantages? Thanks ahead of time.
Janis Zroback replied
Gouache is an opaque watercolour..the shades are brilliant in hue, but it is easily dissolved, so you have to be careful going over a layer that you don’t remove it…I like to use it in conjunction with watercolour as by itself it can look very flat…though some artists like that look..it is also referred to as body colour…
Heloisa Castro
great work
Janis Zroback replied
Thank you so much Heliosa… :))
betha
Ooh I love this one, the expression holds so much. Well done on the series, they are all fine pieces.
Janis Zroback replied
It’s my favourite so far Betha…using this medium gave it a different texture, and I love it…thank you so much..I’m really pleased you like the series…

catherine walker

bev langby

Monica Scanlan
Superb work!!!! Great job!
Janis Zroback replied
Thank you so much Monica…I’m happy you like it..… :))
Jim Phillips
I want to ask what she’s angry about, but then her glaring stare is beautiful. It may me think that my wife Barbara look when it’s stern and serious is probably the most striking and beautiful, not neccessarily when she happy or laughing. Good work Janis.
Janis Zroback replied
Angry that life has caused her pain, the pain that many women go through, but that does not mar their beauty…her hair is gone but her wonderful eyes and lips are there…thank you so much Jim…
Linda Callaghan
I too thought of Grace Jones instantly…as this is the expression she wears…very beautiful Janis..those eyes are piercing…whether it be an emotion or an object she is looking at it is a very determined look!
Janis Zroback replied
Her lack of hair is a hint about her story along with the poem…she is actually looking both inwards and outwards to her future…she is tormented and in agony….determination, as you’ve said may well be a part of it too… depending on their life experience every viewer would focus on different aspects of the work…though there are clues to what I was thinking, it is always fascinating to me to read the various interpretations of the piece.…thank you so much Linda…
Carla Jensen
Oh Wowww…Stunning..Janis!! what a very intense almost sad look she has in her eyes, as if she is fighting the battle of life, determined to win but it has taken its toll on her !! Amazing work my friend, just amazing!!!
Janis Zroback replied
Carla…you are right on the money…she is fighting the battle of her life and is determined to win…it has taken it’s toll as you say, she is in agony, but her beauty is still there intact…as the poem says “Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror”...she is all women who have to go through the same experience…thank you so much….

artisandelimage
bravo !

Janis Zroback replied

Epazia Espino
this just grabs my soul and holds it, breathtaking! I feel this fearceness and determination sometimes, i wish i had it more!
Janis Zroback replied

Alison Pearce

Karin Taylor
truly fantastic Janis! wow! so dramatic, bold and very beautiful. I love her eyebrows and the view from the side this time, wonderful!
Janis Zroback replied
This was the first of the group in pure waterclour…as you know, gouache is a watercolour…without the acrylic they are more luminous, and I think I will continue that way for a while…the one after this is in watercolour too..
I love your wonderful complimentary words Karin…thank you so much…
robpixaday

You’re very welcome Leslie…
Joanne Bradley
This beauty is fierce! She appears cold and calculating! And oh so haughty! And yet there is an underlying sadness in the depth of her eyes! Did I misread your intention here? Love the lines from Kahlil Gibran, I had text read from the Prophet at my own wedding!
Janis Zroback replied
She is in agony…has to make terrible decisions….view her lack of hair and the idea of what we think is beauty…that will provide some clues…
I love Gibran too…it was the first gift I got from my husband…a white and gold bound copy…thank you so much Joanne…
