Portrait...The Queen

Janis Zroback

Portrait...The Queen

She is regal, she is royal, she is every woman, she is you, she is me…she is strong in body mind and soul, she is timeless,...she is wise, she is free, this woman, “The Queen”... The Fourth in the series, her face is half turned to the viewer, looking away, conscious of her dignity, regal in her bearing, as if carved from the rarest wood...

I have named you queen.
There are taller ones than you, taller.
There are purer ones than you, purer.
There are lovelier than you, lovelier
.

But you are the queen.

When you go through the streets
no one recognizes you.
No one sees your crystal crown, no one looks
at the carpet of red gold
that you tread as you pass,
the nonexistent carpet
.

And when you appear
all the rivers sound
in my body, bells
shake the sky,
and a hymn fills the world
.

Only you and I,
only you and I, my love,
listen to it
. Pablo Neruda

A true queen of the Nile. Like the green tints you’re working into these. Great series.

  • Janis Zroback replied

Re: colour….I tend to use what I have on the table at the time, but then I usually have out what I like best, so it generally works out…these days I gravitate towards greens and siennas with some blue as well…but there’s a lot of layering of colour involved…
I am really having a good time with these and have a whole lot planned in my head for the rest of the series…thanks so much Jim…I’m glad you’re enjoying them…they’re going to be around for a bit…

  • catherine walker

    catherine walker

This is truly amazing and beautiful..so well done janis..
did this face come straight out of your mind, where did the inspiration come from ..I love this painting..gorgeous face!

  • Janis Zroback replied

The faces are every woman…everything I see around me, gets stored up in my head to use in my painting, from a nail in a wall to an interesting face on the cover of a fashion mag. at the grocery store or my friends faces or something on a neighbouring house or garden…I pour it all out when I paint, most times not knowing where it came from…when I finished The Queen, I thought she looked a bit like Frida Kahlo, whose face I had not seen in years, but her mouth is like a very popular fashion model from the 1980s, again, whom I have not seen since then…i can’t remember her name, but she was gorgeous…so the portraits are a bit of this and that from my subconscious…like I said every woman…
I’m thrilled you like them..thank you so much…

  • Linda Callaghan

    Linda Callaghan

stunning painting Janis …also love the words….she looks very regal, egyptian possibly, and also her face says it all…I am Queen!

  • Janis Zroback replied

Everybody think Egyptian, and I am agreeing with all of you as I think so myself..at the same time she is all women…we are queens in our own domains….thanks again for your insights Linda…much appreciated…

this is so beautiful, it reminds me a little tiny bit of gaugin’s style or colour…or perhaps it’s the islander appeal…. delightful

  • Janis Zroback replied

You are right about Gauguin…it does have the massive feel of his women…thank you so much Karin…

  • bernard lacoque

    bernard lacoque

Has the sensitive touch of some fayum mummy portraits…Egyptian yes but not a queen like Cleopatra or Nefertiti. Just an ordinary woman facing.

  • Janis Zroback replied

I agree…I meant her to be all women, not a regal queen on a throne…thank you so much for your insightful comment…

Couldn’t help but notice the similarity to Nefertiti! It is a regal look and somehow it reminds me of Beyonce as well! Beautiful, proud and strong she speaks for today’s woman as well… Just discovering this series Janis, and I am amazed! Your capture of the mood and feeling in these faces is astounding!

  • Janis Zroback replied

People have said that…I didn’t intend it, but when it was finished, I did think she looked regal..I’m so pleased you love the series…thank you so much Joanne…
