9

“9” is the first of a new series called “Pure Abstraction”...the title refers to the number of triangles that are apparent to the eye at first glance… all my Still Life paintings are made up of triangles and it appears that my subconscious is at work here as well, as I did not consciously plan the shapes or the number in advance…I always let paintings evolve as they will, using materials that come to hand…you can call it automatic painting, but there is no doubt there is real significance to what emerges in the end...
Nine is a very significant number, and references to it occurs in mythology, the occult, the Bible, to name a few, and in mathematical science it possesses properties and powers which are found in no other number….it is the number of finality or judgement
There are many layers to the painting, which evolved, as I said, almost from a subconscious need to express myself in this particular way…I think here the viewer becomes very significant in that it allows a diiferent dialogue each time the painting is seen…an abstract work engages the viewer in ways that are totally different from any other genre...
Inks, Pastels, Watercolour, and Acrylic on Masonite.

so true #9 is a very powerful number….......in math….....
Janis Zroback replied
Yes indeed it is…among others may be mentioned (1) that the sum of the digits which form its multiples are themselves always a multiple of nine; e.g., 2×9 = 18 (and 1+8=9); 3×9 = 27 (and 2+7=9); 4×9 = 36 (and 3+6=9); 5×9 = 45 (and 4+5=9), etc., etc.; and so with the larger numbers: 52843×9 = 475587 (and 4+7+5+5+8+7=36, and 3+6=9). (2) The sum of its multiples through the nine digits = 405, or 9 times 45.
Thanks so much KJ…glad you like it…

i find it fascinating, and immediately like sneha above, thought of bubblewrap, which i love to pop and have an affection for, as it protects my paintings and frames….. i love how you express yourself not only in colour and form, but also in the written context. Very valuable insight into the amazing artist you are :)

Patty Vogler
Your versatility amazes me! Awesome work, just beautiful. Did I understand you earlier to say that you handcut a stamp to use on this? Is that where the bubblewrap texture came from? Reminds me of honeycombs…
Janis Zroback replied
Thank you so much Patty….
I cut relief prints from a number of different materials: linoleum, rubber, erasers, foam core, wood, styrofoam and so on…I bought a rotary tool recently, so I can cut harder materials easier, without chopping my fingers, though the tool itself has it’s dangers…I have to use goggles, and be very careful about safety more than ever….I normally use relief prints for my craft projects, but now they are creeping into my fine art paintings as well…they provide another dimension of texture and pattern…
Alison Pearce

Oh this is great Janis, the colors, the triangles, the design and patterns within are just excellent!
It is so interesting how this mathematical and geometric stuff comes out of your subconscious to create such a fine and artistic abstract!
Janis Zroback replied
It’s totally from my subsconscious…all my still lifes have triangles contained in them and one I completed today is a mass of them…I don’t know why it happens…thanks so much Joanne… :))
