Door#6...Rust

Janis Zroback

Door#6...Rust

Door#6” is drawn in Pastel, Sanguine and Charcoal on Clayboard, my latest favourite support for all media…it is not an easy surface to use as paint is not absorbed as on paper, but I am loving it especially for drawings like this one..the drawing is subtitled “Rust” as I want to give the sensation of rust…the gritty feel of it under your hands, and the warm ochre and sienna tones that appear when metal is exposed to weather for a long time…you will note that in this series the doors are not really there…these are images of the hardware that make doors work the way they are supposed to work…this is an old handle left behind by the previous owners of my house…I have treasured it….I think Janus would be proud....

Rust conjures all sorts of images…it is either something we want to eradicate with steel wool and CLR, or if you’re like me you love it’s textures and colours…in reading about rust I meditated on several lines I came across…
Rusting realities obscure our view…
Memories become like rust, eaten over the years…
Rusted, Abandoned, Safe..
Rust clings tight, covers and grows…
I save rust

more of your pastel perfection here for me to just marvel at…. i really love the rust stains particularly in this one, and just the focus on an object that is manmade, and yet i can still marvel at it’s lustre and beauty

  • Janis Zroback replied

Thank you so much Karin….I’m taking a break from the doors, though I am using pastels in my mixed media abstracts too as they are out on my table, but they are combined with inks and acrylics and watercolour, so it’s not so messy…I had constant headaches in this last series as it was pure pastel and I was breathing in the particles :))

you have definitely captured the rust in this painting Janis..also the wetness behind the handle ..who would have thought rust could look so beautiful!

  • Janis Zroback replied

I love it…I find any patina of age tells a story…I find myself wondering who had it first when it was shiny and all that must have happened in between, but most of all I like the patina itself…the texture and the colours, and I want to reproduce it in paint right away…thank so much Linda…

  • Reynaldo

Janis very well done I like the treatment, and the look great

  • Janis Zroback replied

There is no treatment…it is entirely drawn by hand with pastel crayons….I don’t alter my work digitally….thank you so much…
