Door #3

Door #3

This is the third painting of door knobs, in the new Collection of “Everyday Things”…in watercolour this time and less structured than the first two, this shows the door knobs from both sides of the door, set in a triangle as I do in all my Still Life paintings…I love the patina on the brass and before I started to paint, I was astonished to see that the colours of some of the items on my painting table were reflected in it…so of course I included them...

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford Hot Pressed Paper..

It went many years,
But at last came a knock,
And I though of the door
With no lock to lock
.

I blew out the light,
I tip-toed the floor,
And raised both hands
In prayer to the door
.

But the knock came again.
My window was wide;
I climbed on the sill
And descended outside
.

Back over the sill
I bade a ‘Come in’
To whatever the knock
At the door may have been
.

So at a knock
I emptied my cage
To hide in the world
And alter with age
... R. Frost

Thank you so much Lora…glass is a pain in the neck to paint, so I don’t do it often…especially something as small as this is… :)))

  • Janis Zroback replied

Well I can’t ask for a more wonderful encomium than this…..right now I am looking at my house which is pretty old for Canada, which is a realatively young country, and thinking that you would probably like it…..it’s getting close to 100 soon, and as we are only the second owners, it is pretty intact as far as period details go…e.g.nice little stained glass windows and great door knobs…thank you so much for the lovely compliment… :)))

No question about your artistic skills, I have long since admired them, but what I think I really find amazing is your thought process in determining what to paint. Again I’m impressed with the series.

  • Janis Zroback replied

I have missed you Jim….I guess you have seen the new series of everyday things of which these door knobs are a part…I decided to jump right into pure pastels this week without any experience, which was foolhardy to say the least….using pastel clayboard was also new to me, but I felt that if I didn’t I would never know what it was like…previosly I used pastels to texture mixed media paintings and I thought it was time to try them on their own…I like the finished work and I plan to do more…I’m so glad you like it…thanks so much…

Love the triangle composition! Is this something you do as part of your style or is it something that is recommended for still lifes. I love diagonals in photography and of course the golden ratio means triangles as well. You captured the brass perfectly and love your inclusion of the reflections and I agree that the shadows are great!

  • Janis Zroback replied

I never noticed the triangles until after years of painting…I was looking at my work one day, and suddenly saw that I painted everything in triangles…no matter how simple or complicated teh subject there were triangles within triangles, on top of other triangles…
I never studied art, so painting according to any rule is foreign to me, as i don’t know waht they are…this all came out of my subconscious…I don’t even notice that I am doing it till it’s done…there are about 7 triangles in the painting on this page, all done without thinking or planning…in fact I just counted them for the first time as I write this, so there maybe more….I don’t know what it means, but I don’t ponder over it…I just let it happen..
    Thank you so much Joanne…

  • Janis Zroback replied

Yes there are more than 7…
