Door #2

Janis Zroback

Door #2

This is the second of the new series of drawings, and is also part of the Collection of “Everyday Things”…as with the first seen below, this is a drawing with pastel crayons….it is interesting using crayons instead of brushes and paint, and actually a whole lot messier…I added another dimension this time with the cloudy effects that creep over the door knob...

Pastel Drawing on Clayboard…

With blank paper lying in front of her,
She takes a pencil and begins to sketch,
Concentrating, her eyes narrowed,
Puzzling together each line carefully,
The blank paper soon is filled with shapes,
Different shapes and sizes,
Creating an art for all to see,
A piece of work, a part of her soul

Ahhh.. I was wondering what is that! Very well done! You are like a magician! You can change to art any ordinary thing!

  • Janis Zroback replied

Simply door handles, without the door attached….I am doing a series of them…I like the word magician and I wish it were as easy as saying abracadabra…lol….these days I’ve got crayon dust all over my desk…drawing is definitely messier than painting…thank you so much Faith…it’s very nice of you to say so…

How wonderfully painted Janis, as usual. This has such a strong textural feel. The colors really hold this together well. Just had to come by and comment on some art and enjoy a break from the music. Hope life is treating you well, that you are having a good week. Cheers!

  • Janis Zroback replied

this is amazing Janis…..how can your your art improve?......but it seems to get better and better.

  • Janis Zroback replied

I’ve been painting like this for a long time, but except for my portfolio collection, (you have seen those) and a few others like “The Potting Shed” 1995, I just did not post very many realistic images here…I felt that landscapes and abstracts etc. in a looser style would do better as cards…so it’s just that you are seeing a different side of my art…that being said these are my very first pure pastel drawings…
I have had no practice in pure pastel drawing and just jumped right into these this week..before this I just used pastel to layer texture in mixed media painting, with acrylic or watecolour..I must say I quite like the end result, though I like working with brushes much better than crayons…

Thank you so much KJ…I’m glad you like the work…

What to me usfantastic about this janis
Is the shiny watery effect you’ve achieved with a dry medium!!!
I was amazed to read you used chalk pastels, boggles my mind
    You are so clever!

  • Janis Zroback replied

Yes…these are the first pure pastel drawings I’ve ever done…before this I used them to layer in wet media, to add texture with very broad strokes..however I really wanted to do more work on clayboard, so I decided to try just drawing as a change from brushes and paint…
I am quite happy with the results…on door #4 I used the little Conte crayons…they were a little less messy, but they all get dust everywhere…and I like my studio to be clean..lol…
Thank you for all your compliments Karin…I’m very pleased that you like the series…

I understand about the messy pastels!! I am often covered in it and it gets into everything doesn’t it!
At least it’s easy to clean off, but I must congratulate you, these being your first solo chalk pastels, they are so professional, you mastered them immediately!

  • Janis Zroback replied

I try very hard not to get it on myself…I have a large bin right next to me and I bang the edge of the drawing on it to get the loose particles off, and I have wet towels to wipe my hands throughout…I thought it would be hard to do, but I was really happy with the results…I think you can go from one media to another if you just plunge right in like I do and not be scared…it also helps if you don’t know too much about it before hand… :))
