Door#1

Door#1

This is the first of a new series of drawings, and is also part of the Collection of “Everyday Things”...up to now I have used pastels only as a part of my mixed media paintings, so this is the first time I have done a purely pastel drawing, and also the first time for this subject as well… that’s three firsts in a row….luckily my house is very old and has the most lovely door knobs…I have held them millions of times over the years and know them inside out, as you can see...

wonderful shiny pastel drawing Janis…great contrasts…looking forward to the rest of them

  • Janis Zroback replied

It’s a nice change to be drawing instead of painting, but the dust!! I am wiping down my table all the time…however I wanted to do some pure pastel as opposed to just using a bit of it in my mixed media work, so here it is…I plan to do quite a few pastels, but today I’m doing a watercolour as a commision…thank so much Linda…

yes I know what you mean Janis when I tried my first one I thought ugh! not sure about this …but I am starting to enjoy them now – just have a cloth handy to clean my hands now and then as they feel dry when I am using them…

My hands aren’t to bad…it’s my desk and the things on it…pastels seem to go every where…luckily I’m using supports with a gritty surface, other wise even more would fly off…

I love how again here you’ve achieved this shiny glow with the dry medium
I love the way you’ve highlighted the background surface to one side
It makes the object the real focus! Fantastic work janis :)

How nice of you Karin!!...I loved reading your comments tonight…thank you so much.. :)))

There are few things that compare to opening a door with the feel of an old used metal doorknob in your hand. Love the light shining on its stem! It just pops right out of the composition.

  • Janis Zroback replied

I agree with you Joanne…my house is quite old by Toronto standards, and as we are only the second owners, it has all the old features of solidity and patina…I love polishing all the handles and door knocker and watching them gleam…by contrast we added a new screen door some years ago with brass hardware that is now tarnished but won’t polish up at all…the new stuff just can’t compare…thanks Joanne..I’m glad you like it.
