The Bequest

The Bequest” is the title of a painting…it is an oil painting of a simple lock…the painting has been handed down from generation to generation of the same family…no one knows its origin, for those who knew the story are long dead….now they only know that the painting must never be sold…must never go out of the family…it is handed down to each eldest son and must hang in a prominent place in the main room of the house…the family is very wealthy and own many works of art, and visitors are puzzled to see this strange painting by an unknown artist, covered with the crazing of age, hanging among the Monets and Pollocks…much too embarrased to ask, their questions go unanswered, and many stories have been concocted and whispered over the years...Janis

On the back of the painting, someone had scribbled the following poem

You left me, sweet, two legacies
A legacy of love
A Heavenly Father would content,
Had He the offer of

You left me boundaries of pain
Capacious as the sea,
Between eternity and time,
Your consciousness and me
. E Dickinson…

very thought provoking painting Janis and wonderfully painted…I love the crackle effect especially..the words go so very well with it and makes this lock not sooo simple after all and it becomes a very important symbol in the family line.

  • Janis Zroback replied

I am thinking seriously that I should write more of the story…I just made up this bit for the painting, and now I’m curious to know more…:)))
Thank you so much Linda…I’m glad you like it…

I love the colors and textures in this – I am always amazed how such a simple object can turn into such beautiful art!

  • Janis Zroback replied

Thank you Lora…the history of realism in art stresses the portrayal of everyday objecs as opposed to the glitzy stuff…I love to paint the more mundane things and raise them up so we can appreciate their inherent beauty…I’m so pleased you like it…

In the early part of the century, one son dared to place the painting in the attic…he was killed in a riding accident shortly afterwards..the painting was replaced in the living room, where it has stayed ever since.

Soon after the death of Mark, the eldest son of Matthew, the picture was replaced in it’s spot over the fireplace…it seemed to shine in the glow of the fire at night…the family tried to deny it had anything to do with Marks death, but his old nurse who was still alive shook her head with tightly folded lips…she had told Mark, that nothing good would come of moving that picture…but he would have it so…”Stuff and superstitious nonsense” he scoffed…now look what happened….it wasn’t the horse…he’d ridden that horse for two years…it was as docile as a lamb…they had no right to shoot it…Master Mark should have listened to her…he always did before now.
