I am placing a lock upon my heart,
I am placing a lock upon my thoughts,
I am placing a lock upon my lips
    And double-knitting them

This watercolor is really impressive Janis. As a matter of fact it doesn’t even look like a watercolor, the layering is incredible, it gives the image a rich color and the wood an incredible texture. Amazing artwork Janis. You are so good with watercolor. :)

  • Janis Zroback replied

That is my specialty…to make things look like other things, so to speak….but it is in fact a watercolour…in large size you can see all the drips (purposeful)...
I used very smooth paper…adding a bit more gum arabic which is already a component of the paint, makes it slide around more and not blend, which is perfect for the effect I wanted, but would be frustrating in a regular watercolour painting…... also you have to know just how much to add or you get a sticky mess….
I’m pleased and flattered you find it amazing, as in the past I would only do this in oils…this is the first time I am doing wood grain in watercolour…an experiment in terror, as there is no open time…it dries in seconds…thank you so much Erika…

I am placing a lock upon my heart, I am placing a lock upon my thoughts, I am placing a lock upon my lips and double-knitting them. Amen.
But I think I like the other poem better! :))) xoxox
    Wonderful work Janis! :)

  • Janis Zroback replied

    Ha …I know why….
Re the verse above: it’s an excerpt, that I added as a counterpoint to the other one….when you read the whole prayer, I think you will like it too…I will be adding the remaining verses throughout the page as I do a lot of the time…Im glad you like the painting…thanks so much Dana… :))

wonderful painting and verse and u know it looks like its painted with varnish…........

  • Janis Zroback replied

Just watercolour, but the extra gum arabic can make the paint look a bit like a glaze…thank you so much Bev…I’m happy you like it.

  • Linda Callaghan

    Linda Callaghan

thought provoking painting and poem Janis….locks are used for many things…and keys to open them but this verse shows that a lock and key can have so many different meanings. ...another fab. painting Janis.

  • Janis Zroback replied

Thank you so much Linda, for your insightful comment, and your compliment to the painting… :))

    Fee Dickson

lovely, you’ve done a superb job on the wood textures.

  • Janis Zroback replied

Love doing textures…of anything, but wood and all types of stone are my favourites…I used to do them in oils but I’m now starting to do them in watercolour for the first time…no open time, so more challenging, but I like that…thank you so much Fee…

Let no sound come to my ear,
Let no temptation come to my eye,

    Brilliant image Janis!!!
As for the Why?, “you never know when it will come in handy”, never throw anything away !!!

  • Janis Zroback replied

I am smiling George… you are the only one so far who has mentioned the title…there is more than one layer to the painting and the title is very literal in the first layer…yes you never know…thank you so much…

Loving this group of paintings Janis. The old wood grain is amazing. Super job.

  • Janis Zroback replied

If I were to indulge myself, I would paint wood and stone every day…I have photos of some of the many different types of wood I’ve reproduced over the years…they have no subject but the wood itself..it’s the same with marble and stone…you will see lots more as I’m taking my art in a different direction now…thank you so much Jim…

Beautiful janis…I loved the key ..now here is the lock ..which is just as beautiful!!

    so well done..
maybe now you have to do the lock and the key together…???
    just a suggestion..

    anyway..I love it!

    xxxooo

  • Janis Zroback replied

It’s very rare in life to have both at the same time….we usually have lots of questions but no answers, and vice versa, but I’ll certainly take the idea on board…I’m thinking of a composition already…thanks so much Catherine…

I love all of your work Janis, but this really speaks to me. It is the texture, the warmth, the subject matter and the accompanying writing; and it is also because “locks” in various forms feature frequently in my writing.
Perhaps it is a yearning withing all of us for freedom? Beautiful!

  • Janis Zroback replied

When I am asked why I do such a variety of styles and subject matter, I reply that it is because I love painting so much, and also that I want to paint subjects that would appeal to all tastes..each viewer would find something personal to him or her…this is a platform for the world to visit and they are all looking for something different, something personal…
I’m so glad this resonated with you…I am gradually adding new types of work, and I am really happy with the reactions to them…thank you so much Alison…

the prose strikes very true and goes so well with the artwork
amazing textures and colour infused here Janise
    wonderful work! x

  • Janis Zroback replied

I find that adding prose or verse gives the viewer a jumping off point to their own dialogue with the painting, so I always include some…thank you so much Karin… :))
