Still Life with Wellingtons

Still Life with Wellingtons

Still Life with Wellingtons” is another of my larger works that I promised to start adding to my RB gallery…just finished today, it has all the components of my favourite style of painting; lots of texture, trompe l’oeil, and a touch of surrealism in the subject matter…the shiny boots contrast nicely with the rough wood and the rusty nail….it will fit in perfectly with the Spring Fever collection, but really belongs with the Portfolio collection…the whole is totally imagined…I created the wood panel as I went along and it was such fun, I had to restrain myself from adding more knots…I found Elizabeth Bishop’s words to be truly an inspiring accompaniment to the painting”...

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford Rough paper…Challenge Win in First Things and featured in The Outsiders and other groups…

It was cold and windy, scarcely the day
to take a walk on that long beach
Everything was withdrawn as far as possible,
indrawn: the tide far out, the ocean shrunken,
seabirds in ones or twos.
The rackety, icy, offshore wind
numbed our faces on one side;
disrupted the formation
of a lone flight of Canada geese;
and blew back the low, inaudible rollers
in upright, steely mist
.” Elizabeth Bishop, The End of March

This weekend is it…it will be warm enough and that mound of snow would be finally gone…I had a look today and the tulips are up, but everything else is flattened by the snow even the Bergenias…I depend on them to carry me through till April...Janis

Wonderful “still” Janis. I’d never thought that ordinary boots and old key could be shown that extraordinary way… Awesome job!

  • Janis Zroback replied

Oh yes…there is a romance to everyday things that people tend to overlook…e.g.think of all the memories associated with an old key….I like to portray the ordinary in a different way, to make you think..thank you so much Faith…. :))

My house is almost 100 years old and when we bought it many years ago. I inherited lots of keys…a lot don’t fit anything in the house..they are all door keys like the one I painted…I wonder why there were so many…but there are many mysteries in this house…like all the bells...

  • Bradley Nichol

    Bradley Nichol

    • I have these keys too Janis and the doors to go with them on a house I bought in Nova Scotia….ahhh the wonder and mystery :-)
  • Janis Zroback replied

Do you have doors that belong nowhere too?...I had lots and last year finally plucked up the courage to have them taken away…they were in my garage…good solid doors…but they had to go…I kept them for so long wondering what to do with them…I still have one or two…
I still have bells in most rooms…have never taken them out…who rang them and why is a mystery…there was only one owner before me and she is dead now…it will be a mystery forever…there are many more mysteries in my house…maybe I should write about it..there is a ghost…

The local fishermen wear a white version of these boots. They call them “Sneads Ferry Sneakers” after a local shrimping village by the name of Sneads Ferry. I would have painted the local version except another local artist (who is also a close friend) beat me to the punch and has that work in a limited print series that was a big seller for her. Fantastic job you did on these.

  • Janis Zroback replied

I haven’t seen white ones…here it’s mostly green or black…thanks so much for the compliment Jim…I’m glad you like the painting…

Lovely. Goes really well with Sap bucket. The composition works brilliantly.

  • Janis Zroback replied

Yes I am working on a series of these, with a similar theme…something I habitually do…I’ve started to post collections that I usually don’t, as they are shown elsewhere or sold…plus I thought they were too large…but they seem to be o.k. for cards too, so I’m going to add more…thanks so much Fee, for the lovely compliment…

It’s getting warmer and warmer, but the ground is still soft and slushy…boots are necessary if you’re not going to sink up to your ankles…besides it’s a still little cold, so I recommend thick socks.

great texture in the wood Janis and I love the wellington boots as we used to call them growing up ..reminds me of the pair I had when young…and I love the key hanging there too which adds more interest…fab. painting

  • Janis Zroback replied

    Thank you so much Linda…
We call them wellingtons too or sometimes gumboots….as you can see I am posting works from my other series..and tonight I posted a different style…the rapidly painted watercolour sketch I did today to illustrate a poem…...

  • Linda Callaghan

    Linda Callaghan

yes you said it only took you half an hour if I remember rightly…glad you are posting it!

  • Janis Zroback replied

Yes the snowdrop painting itself took much less time…it’s one of thsoe fast and loose ones…I was counting the time from when I read the poem…
I posted it so more people can read the poem, which was the important factor for me…you can also see the painting in it’s largest size too…I just finished posting it…

  • Karin Taylor

fabulous work Janis, i love how you make the boots all shiny like that, and your key is amazing!

  • Janis Zroback replied

I am also a decorative painter, (muralist) so I know how to make anything look like something else, and that is the part of being an artist I most enjoy…the total creativity that’s involved..

  • Janis Zroback replied

Those are the things I do best…the surface of things…and from now on I am going to concentrate a lot more on them in my work for RB…so far I’ve been loading only certain works that I paint just for RB…but I’ve decided to post some of the other work I do, if I feel it will work well as a print and will appeal to a wide audience…thanks so much Karin…I’m really pleased with your response.. :))
BTW, Linda was referring to another painting… not this one…

Hi Janis, I am so behind on comments these days…but had to stop and leave one here. I love this, and The Sap Bucket as well. Seeing these wellingtons is a confirmation of spring and brings back good (discoveries in the water and mud), and not so good childhood memories (being forced to wear boots by my mom!) I love the contrast in colors. Such a great choice for the boots, they make them in the colors of the rainbow today but I prefer yours….and I will be picking up a pair this week…because there is no better footwear for splashing through puddles or stomping through mud….!

  • Janis Zroback replied

You are so right…they really make you feel you can go anywhere in the garden and have perfectly dry feet…I really loved painting them…thank you so much Joanne, for your lovely comment…

So appealing, Janis. I love the subject, the colours, and your creative style of painting. I’m not sure I understand what you mean by “too large”, however. Looks great to me.

  • Janis Zroback replied

I thought the originals which are quite large, would not be suitable for cards, as to photograph the whole mage I would have to take it further away, but in fact they turned out o.k….thank you so much Jan…very nice of you..
