Pears... Heat

Janis Zroback

Pears... Heat

Heat” is my second version of DiEtte Henderson’s sepia toned photo Two and a Half ...see “Marooned” below.

In this version, I painted the three pears in watercolour, with vibrating hot red surrounding them…where as the earlier huddle was cool, here they are huddling as if to shelter from the intense heat which shimmers around them.

O wind, rend open the heat,
cut apart the heat,
rend it to tatters
.

Fruit cannot drop
through this thick air
fruit cannot fall into heat
that presses up and blunts
the points of pears
and rounds the grapes
.

Cut the heat
plough through it,
turning it on either side
of your path
. H.D.

I have added the painting to my Pear Collection…see some samples below..

Janis, this is STUNNING! It’s hard for me to say which one I like better. I love all the purples, pinks and blues in the first one (I groove for those colors) but I really love the red/orange color in the second one. You are awesome!

  • Janis Zroback replied

What a lovely compliment Diette…even when I have a plan in my head I never really know exactly what I am going to do until I get the brushes in my hand…sometimes I change my mind at the last minute, without even being conscious of it…these pears were going to be an ochre colour and I ended up using a lot of blues and lo Bartletts started to emerge…I really like the results too…yes they both have an equal place as they are so different…thank you so much…

Janis, this is my favourite out of your pear collection. It is an unusual idea that works really well – that juicy white flesh of the cut pear makes a great contrast to the surrounding glow.

  • Janis Zroback replied

There’s proably a good reason why you do…

I read an interesting article today, that I will post later on..it said that “The painting you do five years from now can only be done five years from now.  You can’t rush it, and it can’t be done tomorrow..years of experience shape who you are and influence what and how you see the world, and ultimately what and how you paint”.

The earlier pear paintings I show here on the right, were done over the past few years…it’s now several years later, and I paint with a different type of conviction…

I wonder what my pears will look like five years from now…

Thanks so much Susan…I’m so happy you like it…

I meant to ask you about the accompanying text – did it inspire you or did you find it afterwards?

  • Janis Zroback replied

Both..if that makes sense…I am an avid reader of both prose and poetry and things remain in my head…though I had no title at the beginning, the word “Heat” occurred to me while I was doing the painting so after it was completed I knew a poem had to be out there somewhere, even though I did not know what it would look like…I went looking and found it…it was perfect…
